Should Answerbag ban curse words altogether? I'm not talking about cursing AT someone, but just the use of curse or swear words.

Yeah, that would be easy to enforce. Staff and CLs have enough to do as it is. It's not encouraged, but it's not against the rules.

There would be a LOT of PBing going on--poor staff couldn't keep up. Actually that is what makes this site so good..freedom to say what we feel without fear of getting in trouble (within reason of course). That is why a LOT of us left other sites like YA and places. So, I say NO

No. Swearing is a good way to express oneself when nothing else will suffice, or at least, it can compensate for what would otherwise be much worse if we didn't have swearing as a form of expression.

Well, this applies a whole lot more to real life than on here, but what I appreciate about Answerbag is the diversity and the freedom of expression. It makes it stand out from other places, makes it more "real", in a way. We aren't restrained by preschool like rules and constant nagging, which is very nice, and the people that DO go overboard or abuse the freedom do get warned, and sometimes dealt with, so I don't think it's that bad, plus the site does have an age restriction, so for the most part, I like to believe that we can trust most members to use decent maturity and restraint.

Taking swearing away would suggest that many other things would be taken away, and too many online communities suffer from these sort of vices, and makes them uninteresting, if not insulting at times.

    WTF you talkin' 'bout, Willis?

I can see it... If they aren't at least dashed out... Think of emails... Sometimes the only way to get things through to someone (usually forwards) is to dash out the vowels or more, leaving the "frame" of the word so it's obvious what it is without saying it.

BUT, then people would work out ways to "get around" it, you know.

They COULD programatically change the words, dashing them out, but that would entail more processing time to go through all questions, answers, comments, etc., and make the changes, slowing AB down.

A total ban? No. Banning them in questions (except the occasional WTF and the like)? Yes. Elsewhere? I think it depends on the intent, which, of course, makes it hard on CLs and staff.

I don't normally curse that much and I think that too much can weaken your respect others may have for you. But after hearing a 8 year old cuss his mother out at the gas station I no longer concern myself around children hearing bad words.

I also am not sure what words are really seen as swear words. I think many have an idea of their own which words are bad and which ones are alright to say.

I see no problem with cursing and cussing ,but I would draw the line at obsenities,I am really surprised at some of the words I have seen allowed on AB.

No. If you want a real answer from me, you've got about a 50/50 chance there will be curse word in there. It depends on how stongly I feel on the subject. That sort of nonsense is what cause a mass exodus of users from Live QnA.

I think Ab'd loose a lot of users. I enjoy that I can use whatever word I find appropriate. I try very hard to not be openly hostile and liablious towards other members, but sometimes I just need to say What the frick, ya know?

WTF, you want to turn this sight into Yahell? I'm not offended by a little cursing. Some people do go a little over the top, especially those who most consider trolls and love to stir up trouble. If they are over the top and being abusive and attacking others, I flag them. I do try to curb myself a bit here. I curse a LOT more offline than I do online.
