  • Since there is no evidence for deities, I can only conclude that the alleged relationship is strictly imaginary.
  • Well we've seen scientifically that the chemical reaction that occures in the brain due to prayer is the same no matter what god you pray to so I'm going with fictional.
  • It's in their imagination. But that doesn't mean it's not real. I know that I've never actually heard god or physically touched him. But I do have a relationship with him.
  • Great question! I don't think that people's relationships with god are TOTALLY imaginary as there is a large social construct of organized religion that makes it quite public (sometimes). Having said that, since I don't beleive there is a god, I would say that when they pray they are just talking to themselves. That's not neccesarily a bad thing, since that makes it akin ot meditation which can be quite beneficial. Just don't expect any chagnes in the outside world as a result of your "conversation" with god.
  • I have seen way too much evidence to think that God is just imaginary. He said, "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart". That's exactly what it takes, but once you find him you can never doubt his existence. He has transformed my life and answered so many prayers in such powerful ways that I could never believe it was all just my imagination.
  • Does your relationship with your wife take place in your imagination or is it real? Don't ALL relationships take place in the mind?
  • It's as real as the imaginary friend that many children have, but for some reason, more socially acceptable.
  • Science actually shows that people able to have religious experiences are wired differently from those who are not, so that... although a possibility, from a purely scientific perspective is possible. Faith however, Is not to be messed with, even if the religous have created their God. There is simply something about coming together in one accord in one like minded attempt to create or to effect something that by passes any other force or energy on earth. Some attribute that ability to a higher power and some do not and instead internalize it. Same shirt... different day, you know? 6 of one and half a dozen of another. Either way, it is a power inherent in all of us that more than not goes completely un tapped and un used.
  • REcent scientific experiments have found that there are spiritual centres in the brain, so it appears that humans are wired for spirituality. Why would that be if there was no one to respond to those centres? So, as a believing Christian myself, I believe that God is the reason for those centres of spirituality.
  • The answer to this question actually has a history (None of the following attempts to answer whether there is a God by the way.) People's definition of a 'relationship with God' has evolved into what people perceive it as now. People today imagine a deep internal personal relationship with God. Christianity did not start this way, however. A thousand years ago your relationship with God was not personal, it was dictated through the papacy. The pope and the powerful religious figures of the west read the bible, spoke to God, and interpreted it 'for' the people. In other words, average people were not allotted a relationship with God. A major turn in this perspective came with the modernization of printing, and improvements in grammar, leading to something close to the modern book. University students were able to read their books alone and reflect on them. This lead to 'many' philosophical theories about a new, internal relationship with God. Also relevant was the translation of The Bible into English, at which point, not just scholars and religious figures could read the scriptures, but everyday people. It was then discovered that many of the traditions and regulations the Catholic Church had mandated were, in fact, not in The Bible. The large number of church 'scandals' throughout the years also helped to lower the Church's standing in the west, and thus people much less looked to a separate authority to communicate with God. Over time, with the advent of the Enlightenment and romanticism, people began to see themselves as individuals with a sub-consciousness, individuality, and will. This transformation in thinking basically completed the transition of religion into a personal and internal experience. In other words, the relationship people believe they have with their God is entirely dependant on the society they live in.
  • In the imagination - 101%. Saddly, to some people that is their reality
  • Well, I believe that god is totally imaginary, so any relationship must, by definition, take place in the imagination.
