I think this video sums it all up very nicely.
Day in the Life of Joe Middle-Class Republican
As near as I can tell.
Conservatives want less governmental intrustion into their lives, even if such means some few can take advantage of such 'less instrustions' to the point of getting away with murder.
Liberals want more governmental instrustion into the affairs of the murderers who took advantage of the less governmental intrustion even if such means that those who feel they have the right to dictate more governmental instrustion onto everyone regardless of the circumstances.
A $50 Lesson in politics:
I recently asked my friends' little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up.
She said she wanted to be President of the United States some day.
Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her, 'If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?'
She replied, 'I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people.'
Her parents beamed with pride.
'Wow...what a worthy goal.' I told her, 'But wait, you don't have to wait until you're President to do that. You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where a homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use for food.'
She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, 'Why doesn't the homeless guy just come over and do the yard work, and you can just pay him the $50?'
I said, 'Welcome to the Republican Party.'
.
Her parents still are not speaking to me.

Conservative or liberal in what sense? Fiscally conservative? Socially liberal?
Considering that the terms have become exceedingly dynamic, there are innumerable "definitions" of these terms.
Conservatives can be ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservative#Schools_of_conservatism
Liberals can be ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism#Modern_ideology
Pretty darned confusing, is it not?
I am a "classical liberal" ... in other words very conservative. ;-)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_liberal
Generally speaking - VERY generally - conservatives want fewer laws and taxes, small government and lots of room for people to succeed or fail.
.
Liberal - again very generally - want quite a lot of taxes so that there is revenue available to help people they view as less fortunate. They also favor lots of regulations so as to keep an eye on how businesses behave.
They both stand for lies and hypocrisy.
They stand for as long as they can, then they sit down.
They both seem to stand for opposition to the other party.
Well Conservatives (Not all republicans) stand for Hands off government, Individual rights above all, And a small weak central govenrment with the power being in the state or the individual.
While (Modern Liberals) have two Conservative Pro choice issues, Sex and Drugs, But then Every other issues they want to Force, Restrict, and enslave others to service them or to follow their way of thinking.
IE..they want to Enslave doctors to work at the will and control of the less educate.
They want to Force the Poor into Schools that they have Choosen for them..
They want to force you to either give up your guns or put restrictions on your guns..
So the liberal mind set is that a mother is smart enough to choose an abortion..but too dumb to pick out a gun or pick a school for her kid. Those things must be done by liberals who think they are wiser and smarter.
I love it..

I do not understand the responses around here. As far as I know, liberty means freedom and conservatism means preservation. Why do people tell me it's the other way around?
Can someone please explain to me how being liberal is conservative?

This guy also wrote a beyond-excellent book called "The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight" which chronicles the myriad ways that we're destroying our only home, Earth. For those who feel they have a little too much happiness or optimism in their lives, this book will be sure to knock ya down a peg or two.
