When Google indexes web pages, it indexes images found on those pages. When indexing the images, it will take note of the file name of the image, any alternate attribute (commonly referred to as 'alt tags') and the words immediately preceding and following the image.

Placement in the search results depend on numerous things. Most of them are kept under wraps by Google, but some things that affect placement are whether the search terms are in the filename or alternate attributes. As well, how close the search terms appear to the image in the page's text will affect the placement.

Google honestly plays a huge role in the Internet today,

Googles search results are all indexed. So it finds the URL's of each image file type (.gif, .jpg, .bmp., jpeg) and the names of the images (car.jpg, cdplayer.gif, bicycle.jpg) and it will add it to its indexed database, so when you type the word "car" in images.google.com it will find all the file names with the "car.jpg" or other image file types and it will display them in thumbnails so you can preview of each image.

    Hope that helped.
