Help answer this question below.

When driving in auto transmission, do you press the gas pedal until the car shifts gear automatically, or do you release the pedal before the car shifts automatically then continue to press the pedal?

    There is no need to let up on the gas pedal. The car knows when to shift.

    Technically, you may just keep a steady feet on the gas pedal. Most new cars have sophisticated CCUs that chooses the best gear in any given situation. But in some cars (like my brother's '05 Mazda 3) with 4 speed automatic and driver option-up-down flick control (called manu-matic in some models), the transmission abruptly downshifts to first or second gear when you suddenly press the gas pedal, especially when driving uphill. It's quite annoying, and this sudden jerking movement of the car makes me look like a bad driver.

    I have never driven an automatic transmission where you have to let the gas up. That's the definition of automatic transmission... It shifts gears automatically. If you had to do anything like let off the gas, it would not truly be an automatic transmission, far as I'm concerned.

    Of course, it also depends on how much of a "lead foot" you have... If it's revving high, and not shifting well, you may have the accelerator pressed a touch too far. If that's the case, back off a little, and it should shift for you. Then try not to press it so hard. ;-)
