Why can there only be one Grandmaster in Taekwondo?

    I believe you are referring to the Songham Taekwondo style. That is because Grand Master H.U. Lee invented the style and he got to make the rules.

    Although there may be many with a 10th degree black belt and a corresponding title of Grand Master, there can be only ONE "Reigning" Grand Master, who represents the top of the top of the martial artists within that style ... there can be only one person in first place ...

    That depends on the use of the word "Grandmaster." The Korean term Kwan Jang Nim is usually translated as Grandmaster, but actually means "head of school." I don't speak fluent Korean, but I'm pretty sure the word Kwan here doesn't mean school as in a dojang. I think it is closer to saying style, or martial arts lineage. Following that logic, there can only be one grandmaster at a time, whoever is senior, or whoever handles the running of the "school."

    However, I have seen many claim the title of grandmaster after they start an organization, federation or assocation, no matter how small.

    There can be LOADS of Grand Masters, it just takes ages to get to that level. A Grand Master of Tae-kwon do is a 9th dan black belt. It took me 7 years to get to 1st dan black belt, and it gets harder and takes longer the further you progress.
