  • Okay, as a former college student this is one of my specialties; here's what you do. You take two pieces of bread (if you aren't very hungry one will do and just cut it in half). You place some cheese in between the two pieces of bread (I like to use cheddar, but just about any cheese will do). Then (hold on this is the kicker), you cook it (until the cheese is melted). The most traditional way is in a skillet with melted butter, but you can use an iron or any other source of heat as well.
  • A lot of people like to use american cheese because it melts faster and easier, but it's almost all oil, which is kind of gross when you think about it. I like to use cheddar or jack, or even a nice aged canadian cheddar - the trick to using harder cheeses is to put a few drops of olive oil in the pan and spread it around with a little bit of butter. This keeps the butter from burning so that you can cook it a little longer until the cheese melts. My family also likes when I slip some slices of roma tomatos inside.
  • well what i do is use cheddar cheese. i grate the cheese and then toast one side of the bread and then put the cheese on the other side and toast it till all the cheese as melted. oh i add a bit of pepper aswell and sometimes even sliced tomato under the cheese.
  • I have a really nice cheese on toast(UK)/grilled cheese sandwich(USA) Grate cheddar cheese or similiar and then add about a quarter of the same amount of Lancashire, cheshire or similiar crumbly white cheese. Mix them together with a couple of spoonfuls of milk until the consistency goes like thick cottage cheese. Add lots of black pepper. Spread on lightly toasted buttered bread and put back under the grill until the cheese melts and is golden brown. Delish.
  • Using your favorite bread...a nice whole grain, or maybe a sourdough....cheese...open ended...I wouldn't eat those "fake" cheeses if you held a gun to my head...a nice sharp cheddar, or get fancy and go with something containing herbs, garlic...mmmmmm. I do like to use fresh summer tomatoes, home grown whenever possible, a nice slice or two. Butter the outside slices of the bread and as mentioned by others add a drop or two of olive oil if using a "harder" cheese, to keep your butter from burning. A lid (if you are using a flat pan) will help with melting the cheese faster.
  • Turn on the skillet and put lots of butter in it however much you want Then butter your bread either both sides or just the outsides Then I like to get my slice cheese out and ready I put the bread in the skillet, cheese, then other slice of bread Then I keep flipping until it is cooked good I like it to be done so it's just a little crispy but not burnt tasting!
  • Any kind of bread...with butter spread on the outside...any kind of cheese on the inside...grilled on MEDIUM heat so not to burn the bread and learning that by turning it a few times get the cheese evenly melted. And a favorite I learned from my mom...put mayo and pickles on the sandwich before grilling and it all melts together! YUMMY! On my way to make one now!
  • Well I take two pieces of bread and butter one side of each of them. Then I get a skillet nice and hot and spray it with a little cooking spray. Unwrap two pieces of cheese. I usually use American-the kind made with milk and not the imitation kind with veggie oil. You can use any kind of cheese you want to. Then when the skillet is hot you put one slice of bread in the skillet butter side down. Add one slice of cheese in the middle of that piece of bread. Take the other slice and tear it in pieces and add around the edges of the bread. Add the other slice of bread butter side up. When the first side is good and brown flip it and brown the other side. Darn good eating!
  • Take two slices of whole grain bread, and toast both slices until light brown. On one slice of toast, place 2 oz. good smoked cheese, like Bruder Basil, and place under broiler until melted. Spread the other slice of toast with good strawberry jam or preserves. Form into a sandwich, and enjoy.
  • I like mine with meat inside- first brown some deli slices of ham or some thing and once they're ready add em on the bread of your choice with your butter and cheese of choice, and cook. Something else I tries- it is called "grilled" cheese, right? I wrapped it up in foil and threw it on the grill. Once the cheese is melted take it out of the foil to toast the bread a little more. Tasty.
  • ya i would really like to know a good way.. lol
  • I found out that you have to put the butter on the outside... it took me 3 attempts and calling my brother to find that out. I don't cook much.
  • Best way or easiest way? Easiest way is to butter two peices of bread, place cheese in middle and place in warm skillet for a couple of minutes on each side (medium heat - not too hot or you will burn the bread before the cheese melts!) Best way is to melt butter and brush on to the bread, use good quality cheese (I prefer swiss) and quality bread (I prefer Italian bread or a nice panini) and either warm in a skillet, on a griddle or in the oven (this is really a "toasted cheese sandwhich then!)
  • Use a chewy bread and a good cheese that you really like. Butter both sides of the bread, pile on the cheese(don't be shy), add bacon and tomatos. Put it in a panini or grill pan or skillet. If you use a skillet or grill pan put something heavy on top like another skillet. Cook untill golden brown on both sides. Let it sit for a minute or two. cut it into triangles and enjoy.
  • The best way to make a grilled cheese sandwich is to do it in such a way that an image of the Virgin Mary appears on the bread so that you can make lots of money from it on Ebay. SEE: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6511148/
  • This may sound soooo disgusting, but I melt some butter on the frying pan, let it sizzle and then dip each side of slice of bread in the butter, then grill it as usual.. Pair that up with a coke and you've got the best hangover cure yet!
  • I use the rye and sourdough swirl bread with swiss and white cheddar. Butter the outside and put parmesan cheese with some garlic powder and Italian seasoning so it sticks to the butter. Grill until cheese melts. Make sure the layer of cheese is half that of the bread, loads of cheese.
  • using real butter, butter one side of two slices of bread. lay on a hot griddle. on one peice of bread lay a slice of kraft singles...top it with shredded mozzarilla cheese and sprinkle with oregano. place the other peice of bread over top and allow to cook flipping once until both sides are golden brown..(you can alteranate and use provolone instead of the kraft single for a change)
  • Soft oily american cheese fried in butter...nice. :-S Nope - this recipe although healthy is simple and pure delicious NB - the Cheese always goes on top!! The Basic: Decent bread, toasted on one side under the grill. Flip over and butter untoasted side whilst still warm so melts. Grate cheddar on top. Stick it under the grill till cheese melts and is nice and gooey. Worcester Sauce added just as the cheese is melting, and returning it under the heat makes this into the british classic. The Ham monster: As above but after the butter add your favourite mustard and include really finely chopped up ham in the grated cheese. The Spicy! Finely chopped tomatoes and some chili power or crushed chilies are great. Works with any of the versions above (just leave out the mustard in the ham version) The Secret weopon: REALLY finely sliced mushrooms on the bottom. As in, 1/2 a mushroom will cover a decent size piece of bread. They won't really have time to cook, but if really finely slices they will taste great! Trust me, even people who don't like mushrooms have eaten the whole piece before they noticed and thought it was amazing. ENJOY!!
