I think many people don't really care about the difference or what they really are, if the can insert the word in a conversation and the general ignorance level allows it then why bother?

Because they are similar in some ways and also both difficult to diagnose. It is a common mistake made even amoung some experts.

im currently having this problem because my mother had Dissociative identity disorder and was misdiagnosed as schizo. myself have been diagnosed as schizo but i try to get across to the therapist that the voice isnt a external source, its IN my head. if someone heard from an outside source and no one else heard it, that person is possibly psychotic therfore schizophrenia might be an accurate diagnosis. people with D.I.D. do not have psychotic symptoms, their personality is just fractured.

because it was considered so rare, that schizo was far more common. it's easier to regulate with meds. DID is much harder to diagnose and takes years to integrate. plus most won't admit it even when they know they have it.
and mostly within specifics, they both hear auditory voices, and those are very rare as symptoms go. but the difference is the voice the DID hears is inside the head, and is just really another alter trying to hint or be heard. the schizo hears voices outside the head that tell them things to do. not the same at all. most people have no place to store or reason to learn this knowledge.
