Question

Help answer this question below.

A friend of mine popped rather loudly in my ear, and it started hurting. Today it still hurts, and I feel the need to pop it as if I had a cold. I have no hearing loss that I can tell, but it is aching badly. What's wrong with me and how do I fix it?

I have had a hearing problem since I was a baby. I had a lot of ear infections that caused mine, I was immune to antibiotics by the time I was 3. My damage is permanent, but not that bad compared to others (I have about 70% hearing left).

I had a 'friend' hit me in the ear in high school, I went completely deaf for about a minute, and had a slight loss of hearing (beyond what I already had) for a few days.

The need to pop your ears is probably because your ears are reacting to the damage and creating more ear wax to prevent further damage. This would result in a sort of muffling of sounds. If this is all it is it may not be that serious, and will eventually return to normal.

It could just be a temporary hearing loss, as I had in high school, but any sudden loud noise, or sudden hard impacts to the ear, can result in permanent damage, which may be worse than you think.

If it persists for more than a couple days you should have it checked out by a specialist because you could have some very serious damage done, such as a broken or damaged ear drum (if this is the case they probably won't be able to fix it, but will be able to get you a hearing aid that will help you). If the damage is permanent you will eventually get used to the popping sensation.

Go see your doctor. The popping might have injured your eardrum somehow. Only a doctor can take a good look and tell what is going on. Don't put it off, or it could get worse!
