By talking a lot and as often to them as possible...time and patience! But don't expect the words to be real clear either. Budgies, keets, and like types simply are not able to speak with the same degree of clarity as most of the larger parrots.

CAGS Congo African Grays are considered to the be best of all parrots. At maturity they have the mentality of a 4 year old and generally can put together their own sentences from the words they have learned to say. Emily sure does...and it's both a hoot and a tad freakish sometimes....lol

    Recent conversations
    Emily: Whatcha doin?
    Me: Cooking dinner.
    Emily: Oh, ok...I love you!

    0900
    Emily: YOUUUUUUWHOOOOOO KYLE!!!!
    Repeated 2x

    Me: Kyle's still in bed!
Emily: HA...Kyle GET IN HERE! YOOOOUUUUUWHOOOOO, GET UP!

Hannah (my dog) Barking at something someone, outside.
    Emily: Hannah! shhhhh, nooooo,
Hannah: woof woof woof (stupid damn bird I'm not listening to YOU!)
Emily: HANNAH! NO (BIRD THEN BARKS BACK AT THE DOG) Adding: Shhhhhhh! Come sit...(although she lisps her "S" so it comes out not SIT but chit...sighhhhh.)

Christmas tree being set up for holidays...
Emily: HO HO HO, Merry Christmas! (lisping again on those "S's") Crishmush

My parakeet did talk, when I was a kid, but it more a series of clicks...still WE could understand her! My Mom spent A LOT OF TIME teaching Pepe to talk!

Note: Birds do not have vocal cords! All the speaking they do is done by them sucking AIR into and out of their mouths and the position of their tongue!

Kinda cool huh? The first two are pics of Emily and the third, is Jazz my partner's Sun Conure. Jazz had several homes before we got HER. We were told it was a male, but then HE laid a single rather deformed egg, when Emily was busy clutching one time. (Resulting in a quick trip to the Vet because Jazz had some blood around the Vent, and 1.Birds don't coagulate well, and 2. if your bird has a stuck egg you only have about 45 min to GET IT OUT before toxemia starts up and then you can loose the bird!) Emily lays several times a year, 2 to 3 usually with 3 or 4 eggs per clutch, unfertile of course. Jazz, so far, has only laid the one. No males!

It takes many many repetitions and also it helps for the bird to be fond of you and not it's mirror or other bird. Here is a good website that explains in detail how to train specifically a Budgie.

    It's a very good site:

You need to start when its very young ideally, just a case of repeating the words/sounds over and over, loud and clear, on and off every day

Budgies learn to talk best if taught by just one person. The room should be quiet, too many people crowding round or background noise could confuse it and make it hard to concentrate.
Start with simple phrases such as 'good morning' or your budgie's name. Repeat the phrase regularly and always in exactly the same way and your budgie will start to mimick you. Once he learns to say one phrase you can move on to new phrases.

just by talking to it and having a lot of patience. try at first to repeat the same word over and over and eventually it will repeat you.
