As long as you keep in mind that racism is a mental illness, then it doesn't seem so bad.

Sometimes people aren't staring to be nasty, they are curious or concerned and afraid to ask. My daughter has a disability. I've found that if I just tell people "she had a stroke" they make an instant connection and start to talk to her. They just didn't know how to interact until they knew the extent of her disability and whether she needs help or can understand and interact with them. Usually, the best thing is just to engage people in a friendly way. Then you end up with a friend instead of an uncomfortable situation.

it seems you live in a racist/discriminatory town. you need to move to a more metropolitan area with a more diverse community or at least a nicer, more tolerant community where it doesnt matter what color of the rainbow you are or if you have a disability. i used to get that kind of attention when i was a youngster ~ i was a minority in a small white town. but i havent gotten too much racist flak since i moved.

if you dont plan on moving anytime soon, i would recommend continuing to ignore the stares. i think its impossible to not notice, just dont let them make you feel bad. its their problem, not yours. try not to give them any kind of indication that youre bothered by them. it gives them a false sense of power. only stand up to them if they get nasty with you ~ be strong.

and good for you! fight the good fight. discrimination is wrong!

Hopefully not, because then you would have become complacent. Just keep doing what is right. As a wise woman once said to me "THEY (the starers) have their pathology".

You are in the act of ignoring ignorance when you go out with those friends. I get that too but I just try to judge the good side of the starers; label it their curiosity and move on.

Perhaps. It's possible that certain people are staring because they don't understand as well. Remember that. Not all stares have evil intentions behind them.
