ancient civilizations did some pretty incredible stuff, and we are always surprised by how much they could do without today's modern conveniences. but what they did often was inspired by astrology. they performed incredibly accurate alignments, but their purposes were much different from ours. i think we have the same enthusiasm and passion for space today as they had back then, we just are studying the stars for vastly different reasons.

We have better technology to observe the universe with than they did. We know much more about the universe than they did, at least with the technology that we believe that they possessed. So we have studied it well beyond them. We are still exploring space, and probably with a lot more manpower than they ever used to study the stars.

I think that the artist formerly known as triorion has hit on the right idea, but he did not fully develop it. As he wrote, the ancient civilizations believed in astrology. This is the idea that the movements of the planets can influence events here on Earth. Therefore, they built structures to help them study these movements. They also built structures with the idea that aligning them properly on the celestial realm would imbue the earthly structures with power or make them more pleasing to the gods.

Now, we know that these balls of rock and gas have no real influence on events down here. (At least most of us believe this.) So, we don't feel the need to create things with these special alignments.

The whole business was an attempt to gain some control over their environment, which we are also doing today with the same zeal. It just doesn't include aligning a bunch of rocks this way or that.
