    Don't wash it.
I've had bad experiences with that. If it is in permanent marker, you can't trust that.
If the jersey is very dirty, then try scrubbing it with a wet towel. Try avoiding the autograph area.

I've never heard of the jersey not being washed before sold, but anyways...

DO NOT put it through the wash... lol. Made that mistake before, turned out as a big black blob on the back of my jersey :(

You might try spraying the autograph with waterproof stuff, and then carefully washing it by hand (don't scrub too much).
Or if your afraid to wash it could could put it in a plastic bag with a few fleecy papers and tie the bag shut and leave it for awhile, that'll help with the smell.

Next time i'd suggest using a pen that is made to be permanent on fabric, like drublic suggested.

Hope this helps a little, Nikki

You don't! You should not have ever worn it, or how did it get dirty? Those should be framed under plexiglass and hung on a wall if they are worth much money.

MAYBE a dry cleaner, but have someone test to see if the inks are indellible or not. And have the dry cleaner put in writing they can do it without damage and that they have insurance if it gets trashed.

Or, if you want to risk it and are sure the inks are waterproof, HAND wash it in cold water for a brief time in something like Woolite. Be VERY gentle with it, and check it every minute or so.

    I wouldn't risk it frankly.

You should carefully wash it by hand. It may last through one or two washing machine washes, but I wouldn't risk it if the autographs mean a lot.

In the future, you may want to use the Sharpie brand that is specifically for writing on clothing. It is supposed to last through normal washing.

    From the Sharpie FAQ:

We also do not recommend the SHARPIE for use on cloth as it may fade or bleed in the wash.

Thanks for the other helpful suggestions posted here. I have the same dilemna. I had a replica jersey signed, intending to wear it, and never planned on washing it. It has a few spots along the bottom, which I will spot-wash with a wet cloth and a touch of laundry soap.
