Aside from living with my parents for free... we paid $650 a month for an apartment only a few years ago. REALLY low for the area and our income... after two years of that, we took a two week trip overseas with the surplus, and still had a downpayment on a house.

Harbour Bretton, Newfoundland, Canada ... 3 months free rent for 11 of us ... we just had to give the labour ... they supplied the materials ... there were two old houses that needed new plumbing, new electrical, new windows, added insulation, and some paint ... we all stayed in one house (both 5 bedroom) while we redid the other, part time, evenings and weekends, then moved to the redone house and worked on the other ... took us 3 months

I payed $100 a month for room and board in 1973. Shortly after that, my wife and I got married and our first apartment (Septemeber 1973) was $130 a month. It had a living room, dining room, kitchen, and two bedrooms (although you had to walk through the first to get to the second. That was in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Home ownership seems more expensive, but it’s cheaper once you calculate the tax benefits. Buying is cheaper than renting; purchasing a home builds equity, which is a form of savings. Using the right metrics based on the regular analysis gives an exact picture which can help make better Home buying decisions. There is a tool which can erase all the confusion related to home buying. It's a tool which Identifies properties with the most value, establishes the right price range to pay, projects long-term cash flow and appreciation & assesses how to maximize after-tax returns.
