What kind of things are you interested in (Animals, painting, people, kids, etc???)

Market yourself as an administrative specialist and appeal to busy executives that need help with typing, filing, and other administrative needs. You could assist small and medium sized businesses with their research needs. Other lucrative possibilities include massage therapy and cleaning services.

You mentioned not having money for a babysitter: how about doing childcare in your home? You'd have to find out what the licensing requirements are, but you already have experience caring for kids, and childcare is EXPENSIVE for most working parents (meaning, pays reasonably well).
-
If you have kids that are still in elementary or middle school, I would ask around in their school, there are parents whose kids could use some tutoring or help with their homework, some kind of babysitting or after-school activity, charging a minimum per child per hour.

Usually the unempoyment office in your district has a web site that you can sort through entry level jobs in your area. There are some pretty decent one`s in my area atleast. also jobs like bank tellers they pay $10-12 pr hour ( providing you have a clean record) and waitressing in a place with lots of traffic will give you prettu decent tips ( I was waitressing at denny`s and added up my tips with my wage and figgured out I was making like $16 an hour on average) My main suggestion is going through the unemployment office in your state they accually are very helpfull in finding something that fits you. You dont have to qualify for unemployment for them to help you. Good Luck XXXX I also like the suggestion above about child care.. I think that is a good Idea.

Make a lot of friends, fast, and then pump them for jobs. I had a bit of training and college already, but the job market around here is a little weird and I couldn't find a decent job. Then a friend of mine popped up and said "Come work where I work! You'll get to work in your field for five months (tech support for tax preparers during the U.S. tax season) and they give you $13 an hour plus benefits!" These often pay off for the friends too: my friend gets a $100 bonus just for me remaining employed for 160 hours. My mom has been working for the government for 15 years thanks to a friend who told her about the job and how to get it. Even a short term job means job experience which usually translates into more jobs. Another thing about friends is that they can provide you with references. While you might be thinking in terms of "people in the community who know you" references, I'm actually thinking about job-type references. A former acquaintance of mine (lets call her "Kate") had a friend with a second phone line pretend to be a business for a few months. Kate then went out and applied for jobs, listing the fake business and a reasonable number of "duties" she had had at the fake business. When employers called, the friend answered the phone as a "business owner" and gave Kate a glowing recommendation to the prospective employer. The glowing recommendation had better be backed up with some real knowledge and skills on your end: if you say "typing" on the application under the fake business "duties", learn how to type really fast before the first day on the job!.

I'm splitting up my answers because this one might get modded down and I think the other one is a bit better. A mom with school-age kids, ironically, might be best off with an overnight telephone sex line job. They pay very well (around $15-$20 an hour) and require almost no experience (the, umm, "you-know" experience is a plus but not required). You would go to work at the bedtime of your kids, stop working in time to get them off to school, and sleep while they are at school. I realize that this job suggestion might sound sexist, but since I know dads who do it too this isn't a female-only job.

If you love animals & set up your home & yard properly, you might want to check into becoming a Pet Sitter. I know I would love to have a well run & respected Pet Sitter in my area to keep my 15yr old & 13yr old dogs when I go to visit my daughter. I don't want to board them at a kennel because they are so old & spoiled. I don't know what requirements would be in your area, but I bet the Dog groomers, Vets and Pet Stores would be a good source for referrals.

Ms. Getmeouttahere, I can tell you I live in the land of single mothers, Japan. A lot of ladies over here work at bars. You would be surprised at what they make. Also if you are under 40 (Japan is really picky about age in this field) I would say teach English over here. I did it for 3 years and saved enough money to study pharmaceutical drugs. Salary is anywhere from 2300 dollars to 3500 dollars a month. Convert that to Yen of course. www.gaijinpot.com is a great sight for looking for work. You never know. Good Luck!!

Honey I completely sympathise. I am i the exact same boat. Try being a drug rep for Pharmaceutical comapnies or a rep for radilogy/imaging centers. The hours are made by you and often they pay a base slalry. Also departments stores eg Macy's, Bloomingdales can be good. Get shifts and pretty secure. WHat about getting your real estate licence. i know the market sucks but you can still do rentals these days. You get paid a month's rent for each sign-up. Wgat about working in a Casino? You get great tips from the punters on a winning streak! Best of luck to you....realy, really.
