  • It was changed from Philly...I was just there (Philadelphia)last summer. Very historic city.
  • Washington took his oath on a balcony in New York, but New York was never an established capital. Philadelphia was used as a temporary capital for 10 years, I believe, until a permanent place was established in the District of Columbia and it was named after President Washington: Washington, DC.
  • I love how the first two answers were just correcting him as to where the capital was moved from. Couple reasons 1) They didn't want a state to have the bragging rights of having the capital 2) Washington wanted to have it close to his home 3) Washington wanted to be able to design things himself that's just the ones i know of off the top of my head.
  • It was changed from Philly to DC so that no state would have authority over it. So Maryland and Virginia each gave up some land.
