  • At the US Postal Service, the job varied according to the operating shift (Tour). Daytime was mostly downtime, so cleaning and preventive maintenance work was done. (replacing drive and transport belts, calibrating various detectors and light barriers, computer com links, hard-drive formatting, etc.) Also advanced or extensive repairs (large motors, troubleshooting). Troubleshooting went down to the circuit board, power supply, or controller level. These were replaced and sent to a central facility for component-level repair. We did a lot of control cable plug/socket troubleshooting and repair, though. On operating Tours, Techs were to patrol among the machines to clear jams, reset circuit breakers, do "quick fixes" to keep the machines running to get the mail out. Lots of work crawling under machines, coping with sharp edges, and standing/walking/kneeling on a concrete floor for 8 hours a day.
