  • I would rather they stayed neutral in their positions yo...
  • To be perfectly honest, I have never, since I began visiting this site, looked at one advertisement around here. If they became more pronounced, I would probably stop hangin' around here so much. I am unaware of what Prop. 8 is as I do not live in Cali...is it FOR or AGAINST gay marriage?
  • There is no requirement for fairness in paid advertising in the US. There is no requirement, for example, that stations show the same number of ads for each side. They must not5, of course, refuse ads from either side (as if they would). As long as AB does not refuse "No on 8" ads it has done nothing wrong but current law. If you want a political system in which money doesn't count, you will need a lot of changes. Including persuading the Supreme Court that the right to buy ads to the depy of your wallet is not guaranteed by the First Amendment.
  • I hadn't noticed them. It would be nice if they either had equal representaion of both sides or kept the political ads off altogether, but they are likely to accept money from whomever is willing to pay it. Is prop 8 about a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage? I had heard they are going to have it on the upcoming ballot, but I could be wrong.
  • For the record, all of our ads run through ad networks. We don't "accept" ads from any particular advertiser nor do we even talk directly to any of our advertisers - we just run whatever ads the ad network gives us. If "No on 8" wants to run ads here, they're perfectly welcome.
  • I am so sickened with the Yes on 8. It makes me so sad. SLC is doing alot of ad work telling the Mormon people to tell California People to say yes on 8. It makes me sick.
  • Y'know, if you use Firefox and install the handy and simple AdBlock add-in, you won't even see ads. (Of course, if everyone did that, then the site might have to find another way to get them through, so ... never mind.)
  • The only things we can fight is whats posted on AB. Other than that, money talks.
  • Perhaps I am oblivious, but I haven't noticed. I usually ignore the ads, they are more of a nuisance than anything.
  • I find it wrong that would be posted. I feel we need some No on 8 as well.
  • I find yes on 8 repulsive and its supporters equally so. Having said that a boycott is excessive. HRC advertises here also PFLAG and GALDD. While AB provides advertising space for some groups I find repugnant. they also allow me to complain and supply the soap box and bull horn.
  • What the hell is "yes on 8" anyway?
  • I think its totally ok. Its just like anywhere else in the us (other then on FOX). You live in a democratic capitalist country, this is what its freedom looks like (except for FOX).
  • Maybe a group of "No on 8" supporters could buy some ads to place on the site? I honestly haven't noticed the ads, but I also don't look at them.
  • This isn't about fairness, it's about making the money necessary to run the website. Answerbag needs to post ads on the site to avoid charging members for the use of the website. Obviously they only post ads that are paid for, and I doubt that their ad network allows them to pick and choose. If you are really concerned about the equal representation on this issue, I encourage you to purchase ad space from the ad network that Answerbag uses. You have every right to have your voice heard, but in this case, it costs money.
  • Not really. Everybody knows that the opponents of gay marriage have religious backing and deep pockets. Let them waste their money. Then go ahead and vote against their discrimination. It's the best punishment :) I got a phone call at my home today asking me "will you be voting in favor of marriage?" Their way of phrasing voting against gay marriage. I told them, in a delighted voice "Yes! I will be voting in favor of marriage! Then added "by voting your bigoted proposition down". Suddenly they had to go. Was it something I said?
  • I haven't seen them but I would be if I had. I get a lot of email from the HRC and EQCA. I've donated to them but apparently they're being outspent by the proponents of discrimination. I wonder if EQCA and the HRC are aware of AB but don't think that advertising here would be cost effective. Perhaps one of us should correspond with them on this matter. I'll try to keep this in mind the next time I look at my email.
  • Disquieted isn't the word I would use. Disgusted is more like it. Or enraged. Doesn't surprise me that AB would accept an ad like that considering the hotbed of religious zealotry that this place can occasionally be.
  • Not really, I have all the ads blocked and so have never seen them. Frankly if they are all Yes on 8 and they fired you up then I am sure it will do the same to others and in the end is more likely to have people vote No.
  • I block all ads, so I was unaware of this. A lot of websites that are similar to answerbag (like advice forums, etc) have advertising that is inappropriate.
  • I havent seen the ad. I am not sure AB chooses what ads we see.   This is why I like the FireFox add-on called " ADBlock Plus" It lets me block any image I want from most web pages. I can even block a users avatar, if I wish. Of course, I mainly use it to block the big ads on the side of the page. http://adblockplus.org/en/ I hope this is helpful.

  • i agree..and I don't think AB should be taking political sides.
