Grapefruit juice slows the body's normal breakdown of several drugs, including some benzodiazepines, allowing them to build up to potentially dangerous levels in the blood. A recent study indicates this effect can last for 3 days or more following the last glass of juice.

Because of this risk, if you take benzodiazepines, the safest approach is to avoid grapefruit juice altogether.

There is an enzyme in grapefruit juice that prevents xanax from being effectively metabolized and decreases absorption therby lessening its effects.

There is a chance for side effects as mentioned previously.

If you are seeking to enhance the drugs strength and effect, you will not notice the difference, but your body may react a day or two later when you fall asleep at the wheel.

Grapefruit juice messes with lots of drugs.

Depending on where the drug is metabolized. Some are effective while in the stomach some in the intestines.

It causes the absorption of the active ingredient to slow. Which could cause you to over dose more easily.

I need to know why I cannot take my Xanax 2mg with Grapefruit juice. I love my Salty dogs and need to know if this will just increase the effects of the Xanax by just a little or will it be life threatening! I usually take 2mg when I feel my panic attacks are coming along. Any info is helpful, if this only increases the effect, i won't worry because I need the extra kick from the xanax! I'm no druggie but need the relief from my job loss, father dying, etc.

Thisis a Link from a med journal

Here was the conclusion to the study...

Although the combined effects were not distinguishable in terms of additivity or independence in both the DRCs and in the behavior-time profiles, they showed neither synergism nor antagonism. The pharmacokinetics of alprazolam were not altered by caffeine, but those of caffeine were affected by alprazolam.

Very interesting question -- I was not aware of this sort of problem.

Note that "alprazolam" is the generic name for "Xanax."

A clinical study shows that grapefruit juice has a weak interaction with alprazolam containing drugs. However, it is unlikely that the effect of grapefruit juice on the efficacy and safety of alprazolam would be clinically relevant. If you are taking medication in this drug category that has a strong or moderate interaction with grapefruit juice and would like to continue drinking grapefruit juice, please ask your physician if alprazolam could be an option for you.
