On the numeric keypad, yep. That's because it's an ASCII character. You can make other characters with other numbers. ☺☻♥♦♣♠•◘○◙♂♀♪♫☼►◄↕‼¶§ and so on. There are hundreds of them.

Yup. For those who can't, try using the numerical key pad...unless you have a mac...then it probably won't work.
I think they're called ALT codes. You can do it not only with the number 1, but also with a combination of numbers.
My personal favorites....
:○Þ
(colon, ALT+9, ALT+0222)
and
(] :þ
(open parenthesis, closed bracket, space, colon, ALT+0254)
And there's also the beret dude...
