HOW/WHERE DID THE WORD "GROOVY" FIRST COME FROM?

    It came from the 30's. It's derived from the phrase, "in the groove". It was used by a lot by the jazz, or swing musicians.

    back in the 60's a DJ. I don't know his name..used the word grovy talking about the records he was spining..you know records had groves...so they for a while became groovy...and from there people took the word and used it like the word cool..man that is really groovy..MD.

    groovy 1853 in literal sense of "pertaining to a groove;" 1937, Amer.Eng., in slang sense of “first-rate, excellent;” from jazz slang phrase in the groove (1932) "performing well (without grandstanding)" + -y (2). As teen slang for "wonderful," it dates from 1944; popularized 1960s, out of currency by 1980. Related: Grooviness.
