You're reading Citi sent me a letter indicating they will close my account because I have not used it in for a long time. My payments have been on time since I got the card. This is my oldest card at 8+ years. Can they do this even if it adversely affects my credit?

It's the one card that defines the longest portion of my credit history. Without this card, I will have lost 3-4 years off my credit history.

That is not true, you don't lose your credit history. Your credit history is maintained by the credit reporting agencies, not the bank. If they close the account, it will show up as it always has -- an account which was paid in a timely manner, and then closed. That's not negative, it's fine.
If you really want to keep the account, just call up their customer service department. Probably they'll let you keep it just for asking, or they may tell you that you have to use the card for a purchase once every few months, etc. It's just not a big deal, they want to make some money.
