If you have time, wait. Blue ray costs a ton of money (for the player and the discs), but in less than a year or so, companies won't make DVDs anymore.
The difference: blue ray uses just that: a blue ray. Normal discs (CDs, DVDs) require a red ray to scan them, but blue ray uses a blue one which can read the disc faster (don't ask me why). So blue ray discs have better sound, picture, and overall quality.
I say wait (if you can) because the cost of blue ray players will go down in the near future, but that's up to you. But be warned: if you buy a new DVD player, in a couple of years there won't be any DVDs around to play on it.
