You're reading Which term is better to use-'Children with special needs or special needs children?

I don't want to offend anybody with this statement, but it's true..It would just be so much easier, and faster, to just say, they're retarded..It doesn't have to be a bad term. It can just be a lot faster than saying, "a child with a learning disability", or, "a child with special needs"..It's just so much easier to say, "the retarded kid"...At least that's how I feel about it..Call me white, not Caucasian..It's easier, and simpler..No need to get offended by it..Just like it's fine to call an African-American black..You know what is meant by this term..Everybody does..Even if the person's skin color is actually brown, they are still called black..It's just a term, and it's faster to say. Obviously it depends on your surroundings..But if you're just hanging out with your friends, or family, or people you know well, it should be fine. I think it would be nice if you could say it anywhere without people freaking out, but that's life for ya..

I think because "retarded" has become an insult now, its not a great idea to use it. A bit like how "negro" used to be a description, but we associate it with slavery, so prefer not to use it. "White" and "Black" I think are OK, because we've never really used them as insults, so its not so much of an issue. When it comes to language its more to do with the associations we have, than the actual meaning of the words. I mean, technically a child with unmarried parents is a bastard, but its still not very polite to call them that. What it comes down to is that you have to consider how likely people are to be hurt or upset by something you say- its all about thinking before you speak. You don't have to go PC overboard or adere to any rules, just take a few moments to consider whether something might be considered hurtful.

Yeah I know, that's why I said, that's how it "should" be...Also, if I was a child born out of wedlock, I would call myself a bastard, and then laugh about it...People just need to loosen up a bit, I think...
