You really need to be honest with your skiing ability and the type of terrain you like to ski most, or you'll end up with skis that are completely wrong for you and a lot of money wasted. There are still varying levels of stiff (faster) and softer (responsive) skis as with older models, but now, the width of the tip, tail and "waist" (middle) sections matter most to control on various terrain.

Each year, the major ski magazines put together testing teams to try out each ski model for various snow conditions and skier types. These ski reviews lean towards high performance models, but beginners and intermediate skiers can start their ski buying process by reading about different ski models. By comparing the features and costs, you'll be armed with the knowledge to buy ski package for your individual needs and budget, and you will be able to tell ski shop salespeople what you need.

It depends on what kind of skiing you're looking to do. Most skis out there will be shaped or parabolic, which means they have a subtle hourglass shape that helps with turning. Downhill skiers, however, use a straighter, longer ski for stability and speed, and moguls and "trick" skiers use different types as well.

For basic slope skiing, a mid-range, all-purpose shaped ski is probably your best bet. I do pretty much basic skiing (think mostly blues with the occasional easy black run) and I use Dynastar Legend skis, because they match my skiing style right now, but they will also be good for when I get a little better.

I've also had success with twin tip skis and performance skis, but those were rentals. I love my Dynastar Legend 8000 skis, they were a worthwhile investment.

    Good luck!
