Why do "tug" boats push their barges?

    Better control of the barges in the RIVERS when pushing.

    Towed barges in rivers have been known to overtake the tugs that were towing them.

    Offshore (open ocean), you rarely see tugs pushing barges.

    not all of them push barges. i have seen plenty of tug boats actually tow much larger boats in and out of port. go figure, right?
