• Spell check is the bane of intelligence. People don't need to actually know HOW to spell any longer, so they think. Unfortunately, spell check won't pick up when you're using the wrong "too, two, or to".

• Articulate, Rollie. My best friend's son is named Daniel, and his significant other has just born a son. My lady's son is also Daniel. I taught high school English, so I fear no daggers. The ones in my back were from other "professional" adults in the building, not the kids. Kids love me. The sentences I diagrammed were contemporary and therefore interesting.

• I just have to put a little humor in everything I type. Well, practically everything, anyway; sometimes statements escape without their dosage.
  I never enjoyed diagramming sentences. I have a decent understanding of how the English language works, so diagramming sentences and saying, "This is a noun, this is a verb,..." never made any sense to me. I did well at it; made good grades. I just hated it because it seemed redundant to me to be picking apart sentences that are perfectly fine.

• Shakespeare's spelling was not flawless. For instance, he spelled dear as deer, der, and dere. I've read his words in his own hand since I lived and taught in Washington, D.C. for years and went to read his handwritten plays at the Folger Shakespeare Library. Do not question my scholarship unless you can surpass it. Correct that there were no dictionaries in 1599- the monks were in charge of spelling but only wrote in Latin and Greek. Spelling of English words was arbitrary at best- sometimes based on Greek or Latin or even French as well as Celtic, Saxon, and Angle. German entered when British royalty intermarried with the Windsors later.

  How much scholarship does it take to know that if there is no standard, that deviation from it is meaningless? Set aside whether your authority exceeds mine, what makes your standard higher than his? Is there some authority that both you and he recognize that has decided in your favor?

• Thank you. Truly, not truely. (SpellingMan note.) My family grew corn in my youth so we could eat well- we were poor and had a Victory Garden. It's 1953 again. Does cobber stand for corn? GrammarMan respects farmers. GrammarMan wrestled for 8 seasons and coached for 5. Farmers make good wrestlers. I can grapple with grammar problems.

  cobber is just a knick-name, but I grew up working on dairy farms near home (didn't actually live on one), but one grandfather was a tabbaco farmer, the other trukeys. so I also have lots of respect for farmers...and for grammer, unfortunatly I am not an expert at either.
