I get called racist if I call someone black. I get called racist if I call someone African American. What do you want me to call you? I mean, Japanese people don't get mad if I call them Japanese Americans, what's so wrong with this?

The Japanese are proud to be Japanese and therefore are not sensitive to being pointed out. Those sensitive to being pointed out don't want you to call them anything they want you to pay them money ... for any reason they can think of .... say .... slavery years ago.

You can't please everyone. Call them what you consider to be appropriate and that's the best you can do.

Really? I often refer to unknown black kids as "that black kid" to my black students and they take it very, very well.

It's likely just the contempt you show that is getting you called out as a racist. Jews and Arabs get offended at being called White or Westerners as well.

Rick Myres I have been called white and whitey by whites and blacks both and even Vietnamese it never bothered me. Even before I met Jesus. I have called white people white and whitey and it is a draw between those who can be joked with or not be joked with. People who can joke with you and not take joking must be miserable people. -
Jenny_Rizzo Thanks for sharing your views. I am from Italy, but now living in the US. I have heard about this whole color thing and how African Americans tend to make an issue over being called out by their color. You make a lot of sense. Anybody who does not take a joke lightly has serious issues. Be careful with the words you say. :)

Rick Myres You're welcome and I know what you said they keep saying nigga in rap and say it to each other and when a white person says it they do not like it. My niece can joke with people all day but she does not like to be joked with.

Jenny_Rizzo Depending on your personality or what black people call swag, hip white people can get away with calling a black person a nigga. Many white folks were raised in ghettos. They're used to talking slang. Now, if a white person does not have any swag, a black person would not appreciate being called a nigga.

How about negro? No one seems to care when they get money from the United Negro College Fund, so that must mean that it's okay. And the Black Congressional Caucus is okay, so black can't be racist. People watch the Black Entertainment Television network, right? Hell, colored is okay too, right? I mean the NAACP uses it and they're not racists, are they?
