My sister's children, my husband and I want to take my sister and her husband to dinner for their 65th Wedding Anniversary. If we invite friends of theirs, are we obligated to pay for their dinners as well?

    It would be nice of you, but not something you have to do. Just make sure you are clear when inviting them, so they know what to expect. Either way, I would pay for or provide a dessert for the group.

    You can get around this by wording the invitation carefully. However, the classy thing to do would be to pay for the friends as well.

    If you say, "Please join us for a celebration of their anniversary. We will be dining at XYZ Restaurant. Here's a link to their web site so that you can see their menu and price list ahead of time." No one needs to know that you are paying for your sister and her husband, except them.

    I would also suggest that you bring (or have the place prepare) a cake or some other celebratory dessert that they can share in for no cost. In this way they at least get something for free.
