  • Turn the ignition on. Push in the clutch. Gather speed. Pop the clutch and give it gas.
  • First you will need to find a downward slope (a ramp, steep street, etc.) Try to make sure it's not too busy since you will be going down with no power. Push the car to the top of the hill (have a friend push you down and DO NOT get out of the car to push it). Get in, turn the ignition on, put the car in 1st gear, and push the clutch in. Release the E-Brake and get your buddy to push you down. Wait until you gather a fair bit of speed (near the bottom) and bring the clutch up very quickly. At the same time, give it gas. If you do it right and the battery isn't too low, the car will fire up. Let it run for 20mins and it will be good. I worked at a new car dealership and with cars sitting in the storage lot, batteries died often. I got my buddy to push me down in the new car and it fired up no problem. So yes, you can clutch start a new car, and old car, any car that would normally run. Good Luck, Hope this helps *Whoever rated me down please provide an explanation. *To Jimmyz: The steering wheel lock can be defeated by turning the key to the on position. The steering will be tough but possible. As for power brakes, I simply use the e-brake. It's crude but effective. Like I said - I did this a lot and it's not too hard.
  • I have found it's best to avoid a dead battery in a new car with all the power stuff, i can be unsafe if you're in a congested area. Just check your Battery regularly so it's allways there when you turn the key!
  • If the battery is completly flat and it is a new car most likely you can not push start it. The electronics quit around the 9.5 volt area so if the battery is completly dead you are not going to have 9.5 volts. Despite popular belief you have to have a little bit of battery power to turn on the regulator in the alternator. If the battery is totally dead than the alt is not going to work. As it is not a generator, it requires power to make power. Push starting any car is not a good way to get it started it puts undo strain on the transmission as well as clutch. But it can be done in an emergency.

If the alternator needs a battery then how can you take the cables off a battery and have the car still running and everything electronic still working in the car? look at the cables going from he battery to the alternator and starter. the red one is going to the starter which means that the battery is supplying power to starter. the black one is going to the alternator which means that The alternator keeps the battery charged and runs everything after the battery starts it. by popping the clutch you are starting the engine through the transmission which turns the belts and turns the alternator and gets power to everything else. as soon as the engine is running the alternator is turning which is charging the battery. should be able to start the car with the battery next time after jump starting unless the battery is jsut bad and then you should jsut get another one. To geek860. you never pop the clutch in first gear because it could throw out of timing i heard. you use second gear to do it. you also can match the speed you are going and the gear you would normally be in to do it while moving.
  • push push push then steer towards a hill if possible... find a pro that has had a car with a bad starter and let him show you the way!
  • Turn ignition key to on position Release safety brake Put car in neutral Push car or roll down hill to get it moving Push in clutch Put car in 2nd gear Release clutch to point of friction, the a bit slower release it the rest of the way. Car should be running. If you're going too slowly or you release the clutch too quickly the car will stop from the engine load/friction. Preferably drive 20 minutes to recharge the battery before shutting off the car again.
