Don't stockpile. Instead, dig up your backyard and plant fresh fruit and vegetables. YOu can grow potatoes within a tyre frame, and make bread etc from these.
    Put in a chicken coop.
Install solar panels for your electricity
Harness the grey water from your house (washing machines, bathrooms) to water your garden
    Compost
    Install rainwater tanks
    Make a solar oven

Iron your clothes straight from the washing machine and dry your clothes by sunlight.
THese will ensure you great savings and mean that you will have food and not have to depend on stores as much.
You will also have a much lower water and electricity bill.

    Done. never again.

I like all the ammo answers. Also, start building a bomb shelter. :)

    Well... here's what I have

A stack of money in my fireproof safe (not a ton... just enough in the state of an emergency)

My gun and ammo (which I as an American keep in my home always!)

A good security system (check out ADT)

A garden in the yard (Not only is it economical... it's healthy! And you can freeze seasonal foods to enjoy year round)

Conserve energy. I don't turn on my heater or air conditioner unless necessary. Use cold water for laundry and air dry outdoors when you can. If you can afford solar panels I would get them. If you are replacing an appliance be sure it's energy efficient and try to buy it secondhand if possible. Ride your bike to save on gas. Use your tire gauge for your car constantly.

Don't go out to eat. Ever. Unless there is a really, really good reason.

Sewing supplies. So you can make do with the clothes you have. It also helps to know a shoe repair person.

Dollar store cleaning supplies. Why spend $4 on furniture polish when it could just be a buck and do the same job?

Compassion. Always feel for those suffering... even when things for you seem at their worst.

A few different types of guns and plenty of ammunition. As the depression worsens, more people will be forced to turn to crime to make ends meet, and you will need to protect yourself, your family, and your hard-earned supplies from the marauders. Also, the increase in crime will likely trigger (no pun intended) a tighening of gun control laws... but while you can.

Why stockpile, just hoard like everyone else! All you need is enough ammo and sufficient body armor and you can take what you want! Just go to the fema bunker in Virginia and ask them to restock you! Tell them Casper sent you!

Seeds, dried goods, bolts of cloth, rope, fuel, guns & ammunition, tools of every description, lots of leather, gold and silver, more ammunition, and a very sharp knife.

Assuming a massive bailout bill passes, the last thing you should be saving is money. Rapid devaluation/inflation will eat it away by half inside of 2 years. SPEND IT ALL!!! but on real wealth producing assets (e.g., don't buy stock in a grain company: buy a farm!) Otherwise, convert it into Swiss Francs or Brazilean Reals.

Singwell's answer is very thoughtful and it could help a lot. But you could and should pay all your debts, take all your money from the bank and start by cutting expenses from now on. Save all you can and spend the least possible.

No need to stockpile - except that the suggestion of "money" might help. Things are not going to crash competely - basic commodities won't run out. Get yourself a job that they will never be able to do without: undertaker is a good one.
