Help answer this question below.
I'm not a Canadian. My partner is. So shoot (or rate) me accordingly. The Canadian Government is FOR the majority and Quebec is not the majority. MANY people from Quebec feel like second class citizens. Being a African American, I certainly understand why some people would want to separate for that reason. For dozens of years it was illegal to teach French outside of Quebec. People were hung for doing it. Even today it's common for a Quebecer on a road trip outside Quebec to "inadvertently" speak French at (say) a restaurant only to be met with out-and-out anger from "servers" who make it immediately clear that English is the language of the exchange.
Should they separate? One could argue (to borrow and free translate from Abraham Lincoln) "A house divided against itself cannot stand". Question is, is the house already divided covertly within a government too insensitive to the minority to have the compassion necessary to understand what the hell is REALLY going on?
It`s a red herring. Saying that it would be interesting too see how Québec would do as an independent nation.
The Québecois do have some reasons to gripe, and I see their point of view for wanting independance. But for now they are part of Canada and I do not see that changing anytime in the near future.
Pauline Marois anyone?
I am not in favour of separating Quebec from rest of the Canada. Quebec is very much part of Canada and Canadian history. It will break the country that is growing economically strong. I hope newly elected Stephane Dion as Liberal President (who is also from Quebec) will unite Quebec with rest of the Canada.
Quebec depends on those transfer payments, they would never stand alone without a lot of outside support(from U.N. or France). Western Canada has also been wanting independence from Ontario & Quebec(whose love affair takes is above all else!)
i don't really want my province to split from canada, my bro told me things about war and USA wanting our ressources...T_T
I'm a "québécois" and i'm hoping that one day Québec will separate from the rest of Canada. Why ?
First, to protect our french language and our french culture. On that, any canadian will agree that we are strongly different. We have our own movie, music and litterature industries, more active and creative that the rest of the country combine.
Most canadian like the idea of the bilingual system but most of them are not (most Quebecers are bilingual).
We are also more environment friendly, hoping to achieve the Kyoto objective. There is none of that in the west part of the country...
One other good reason is to pay less taxes. In Quebec, we have two taxes to pay, one federal and one provincial. This money belong to us and a big part is staying in Ottawa.
There is a lot of other reasons i could had but i'll just say that without Quebec, Canada is just another state of the U.S. So that's why they don't want to loose us but there doing nothing good for us to stay with them (i want to Ottawa recently and nobody was able to speak to me in french. That's sad).
And by the way, rumors of war or another October crisis like in the 70's are so false and wrong. It is possible to get our independance in peace and respect.
Merci !

Are you sure people were hung in Canada for teaching French? And speaking English in Québec will be met with the same disdain as speaking French in the ROC.

Un canadien-français de 11 ans reçu 12 coups de fouet la veille de Noël en 1844 pour avoir parlé français.
A 11 year old French Canadian was given 12 whip lashes on Xmas eve in 1844 for speaking french.
Still trying to relocate the hanging notation.

It may have happened, but it would have been an isolated case. There were no hangings as such in Canada. And although the French were harshly treated, that quickly changed. The government bent over backwards to accommodate them. And as of today, there is no minority group in a country better treated than the Québecois. The Canadian gov't spends millions if not billions to accommodate them. Bilingualism is a cash cow of biblical proprotions here in Canada. Québecois don`t know how good they have it. They only have to look to the Kurds or some other group to see what "persecution" really is.
