Well you can probably fit 33"x10.50" tires under there stock. But if you do a lift it wont ruin anything, you just have to be sure to get an alignment after you get the lift done. With that kind of lift you could probably fir 35"x12.50" tires.

Couple things actually, you might have weak spark (change plugs and wires). Depending on the fuel quality, you might have dirty injectors. But go ahead and change the spark plugs and see what happens. Don't forget to set the gap!

There is a lever in the glove box that unlocks the trunk. If it is broken, just have someone pull the metal cable that is supposed to be attached to it. While they do that, try to open the trunk. Pushing the trunk lid side to side as well.

That sounds like you need a valve adjustment. There are plenty of classic VW specialty shops, there is probably one where you live. Have them do a valve adjustment (which is fairly cheap), and while you are there ask to have your distributor and points checked.

There's a strobe light tool you can use to check the TDC (Top dead center). You connect it to the #1 cylinder ignition wire, and the battery, and you use that to check marks on the harmonic balancer, and according to that, you rotate the distributor to match the timing marks. Since it's a '97, it might be beyond that technology, but you might give that a shot.
