Answer to:
What has religion done for human beings? Science has made our lives richer and easier with technology and discovery, but what has religion done for humanity? How has religion improved humanity's way of life? What achievements has it made and what benefits?
I guess the reason atheists "don't need God" is that this is just what Satan wants, so he can leave them alone as long as they leave God out of their lives. They lose heaven, but they don't believe in it anyway. The rest of us want God's help as we go through life and its struggles trying to be good and love one another.

Answer to:
Does it take the same amount of points to go up in level each level, or does the number grow as you go up in level? I.E. Do you go up in level every 20 points, or does it take 20 points to get to level 2, 30 points to get to level 3, etc.?
This is the question I've been trying to ask. Can anyone answer it. If I'm at level 30, how many points to get to level 31? Then won't it be more than that many to get from 31 to 32? Where can you see how many it takes for each level jump?

If you want a real answer, you have to ignore all the junk some people put up here. You will get better answers if you tell more details in your question. Did your teacher say there are more than one Jesus Christ? I cannot really answer your question unless you give more information. There is only one Jesus Christ, Son of God, Judge of Man, alpha and omega.

How can you love someone you haven't spent time with? You are attracted for some reason, but not in love. If 0.1ml of a 0.000001 dilution plate contains 56 colonies calculate the number of colony forming units per ml present in the orginal sample
Here's my attempt/guess. If 0.1 ml has 56 colonies, then 1.0 ml has 560. The 0.000001 dilution plate is one one-millionth the concentration of the original. So the original has one million times more. So 560 million colony forming units per milliliter in the original sample. Do you agree?

just put protons and if he marks it wrong get him to explain it in detail.
Answer to:
Nuclear decay is the only way for the number of _______ in an atom to change?
nucleons (protons and neutrons)
The numbers of protons and neutrons in an atom will not change in a chemical reaction, but will in a nuclear reaction. This could be fission, fusion or decay.
I'd answer nucleons, or protons, or neutrons, because these won't change in a chemical change but will in a nuclear change.

I think it is rare these days for people 20-21 years old to be ready to take on the responsibility of children. For most, it is safer and wiser to wait a few more years. With life expectancies up into the seventies, this shouldn't be a big problem. There is still lots and lots of time to enjoy the children you had when you were between 25 and 32.

Has the global economic downturn changed things with respect to the environment? Do you recycle more or less now that you have less money? What about organic foods?
I don't really see how the recession has had an impact on environmentalism. I think Congress is still considering legislation about emissions and global warming.
We haven't been personally affected enough to have to recycle more, thank goodness. Maybe a manufacturing downturn means less factory pollution?

Do you think that dysfunctional family life contributes to worsening relationships in society?
They seem to go together, but which came first (like the chicken and the egg)? There are lots of factors. TV takes the place of family interactions, conversations, games, etc. Busy schedules that don't match up make for missing having meals together. Many fewer people seem to have a strong commitment to their faith in God these days; this was a factor to hold the family closer...

So far I haven't gone to the beach, to walk in the sand and wade in the water, to walk on the pier and take some pictures. For us it is less than an hour away, and I wouldn't go to sunbathe anyway, so summer is not the only good time to go. But it is when the bikinis are out.

Of course I don't think I was a burden to my parents; I was their pride and joy. But it does say something about our society that children seem to be an interruption of the important things their parents are doing. How do these kinds of ideas get started; where do they come from? I'm no expert, but inflation means getting bigger, and economic inflation is when the prices of products get bigger. When prices go up, you can't buy as much with your dollar. Why it happens has something to do with the government making credit loose or tight, but you better wait to find out from someone who knows what they're talking about.

When you look at the stars at night, do you feel a sense of humility and loneliness knowing we're a minute planet in a vast sea of nothingness?
The vast heavens of stars do give me a feeling of humility; ours is a tiny planet around an ordinary star of which there are billions. Lonliness, no, there are 7 billion other people here; we must be able to find love with some of them. I don't believe in life elsewhere in the universe. I think Earth was specifically designed for human life (right gravity, temperature, atmosphere, etc.)...

Answer to:
Do you think the basic value of "guilt" is to change behavior or is there no value at all?
Yes. Your conscience is your built in compass of right and wrong. When you do wrong, you get a guilty conscience, which gives you a chance to think about what you did and do it over in a better way. Too often we just stop with the guilty feeling and don't take action to resolve it. Human nature, I guess, but we should strive to be our "better selves".

Are you closer to who you wish you were or who you wish you weren't?
This probably depends on the day you ask; we all have good and bad days. Overall, I think I'm closer to who I wish I were, but I still have a long way to go. I have my wife and my children in loving relationships, and I have my morals and religion. I'm trying to deepen my spiritual life and that is slow-going at times. There is always room for improvement.

I think it is a good thing. My wife loves to go to the salon and get her toe and fingernails done. It's sort of pretty, but it is how it makes her feel good about herself that is most important. Ladies need their little indulgences that make them feel special, so I say go for it.

I believe you can find good things and bad things about any person. What you choose to share out loud depends on your attitude and motivation. They already have. Government leaders get so much power that they must feel "above the law" and so they disobey laws others must follow. Once in awhile we hear of a Watergate or some other government abuse of the rule of law, but mostly it goes on unseen. It seems there really isn't much anyone can do about it. Some of us hoped Obama would clean up Washington, but now I have...

What is Obama's policy for health care and why is it so controversial?
He wants every American to have healthcare. He wants to eliminate refusal of preexisting conditions. He has said he wants to control costs. He wants to have a government run "public option" to private insurance; the government would sell health insurance policies to citizens who needed one. This is very controversial because it could lead to putting all the insurance companies out...

Why are some people so afraid of Obama?
Give honest Serious answers if you would.
Perhaps because he is telling us a lot less about what he is trying to do than he led us to believe he would during the campaign. We get less transparency than we expected. I am concerned about the National Debt expanding. He led us to believe he would shrink it; I haven't seen him cut any unnecessary government departments yet. Your question contains the implication that it does, so you have some reason to believe it might, based on something you heard. But most of us have no idea what you may be talking about. What I hate most about living in this urban metropolis is the high population density; it is overcrowded with people. There is traffic to deal with, and the anonymity of the multitudes makes people less friendly and more suspicious of one another. Sometimes trying to find a place to park is a real headache, but the weather's great. Can you guess where?

It is love and the struggle for good to overcome evil. If I stopped my answer here, many would consider it and think it over. What about when I add that this is what I believe God wants of us? He is Love, and He wants our obedience, which will result in the very best possible outcome for us.

Answer to:
Why is hell a bad place when heaven dont sound no better?
Who do you listen to describing heaven??? I suppose it does take a God-believing nature to understand, but there really is an objective good and bad, and heaven and hell are the afterlife representations of these two possibilities, good and bad. So it's almost by definition that heaven is good and hell is bad. It would be unreasonable to believe otherwise.

Be honest. If you ever exacted revenge upon your enemy, would you not be guilty of committing sin(s) far worse than what he/she did to you?
I don't know about "far worse", but I don't think it is right to get revenge. The Bible teaches against it, saying it is for God alone to judge and give consequences. So I am convinced to refrain from seeking revenge, even though of course my flesh wants to.

Heterosexual parents: Would/do you allow your child(ren) to watch programs that make a favorable portrayal of homosexuality? Why or why not?
We don't watch much TV. I watch news and sports and my wife watches the old shows from the 60's like Andy Griffith. We do however have a grown son who is homosexual. He and his partner have lived together for several years, and he had a couple of other partners before that. Being Christians, we do not approve of this choice, but being parents, we continue to love and support...

I have a question, Christians, what can you tell or show to prove that there really is a god and hes not just a person or name put into a book with a weird name?
We know God by faith not by sight. We read the Word and pray, and we are comforted and encouraged. No one can "prove" God exists until Jesus returns, and then it will be too late for the unbelievers to convert. Things are different when you are dealing with God; most people don't have much of a problem with that.

My wife is 'incapacitated' by being at work 10-12 hours a day while I'm home being Mr. Mom, sort of. I do all the grocery shopping, a lot of the laundry and some of the cooking. Now that my daughter and son-in-law live here too, they do a good bit of cooking and cleaning. I guess I know how to clean, but I can tolerate dirty pretty well. I think they are making their best effort to catch the bad guy robbers and rapists and such utilizing their detectives and investigators. The regular beat officers patrol the streets rather than investigating crimes. These are the ones who look for seatbelt offenders and drunk drivers. I think with the seat belts we now have almost everyone obeying the law, which protects their/our life and...

Because I am a Republican, I think every person should take care of them self. I would recommend this person find a job right away to earn the money for food. It can't be 50 50 because he shot one more. It can't be 50 49 because that's not 100 total. It can't be 51 49 because that's two more for him, not one more. Unless you killed one together I don't see how it could work.
Answer to:
Why does god not want to be seen? This has allways been a mystery to me. If he is the creator of the universe what has he to fear from being seen? I would really like to know.
I think the answer is He wants us to know Him by faith not by sight. That way we believe in His goodness and love as well as His existence. I cannot imagine God has anything to fear, except maybe that we will mis-use our free will. All He does is to lead us to Goodness, which is Him.

Do you think that terrorist are barbaric and should be treated as such? Does it make us look weak to give them equal rights to American citizens? Would their nations treat our citizens the same as theirs? What if it affected your Family?
It is a difficult question, but I think you have to "take the high road" and behave in ethical ways that you would want others to emulate. We must believe in our system of justice enough to extend it even to those who "don't deserve it". If we sink to their level and summarily execute terrorists, aren't we then just as bad as they are? Horrible as they are, they...

Do you support the possibility of creating a baby with three genetic parents in cases where the mother has defective DNA?
No, I don't think the facts as presented in the accompanying article make a good case for engaging in this practice. Whether the incidence is one in 5000 or one in 250, I didn't read about where the parents could know about the problem beforehand. Parents unlucky enough to have one child with mitochondrial genetic disease might think it worthwhile to use this procedure for...

This is indeed a tragedy, yet one I think that didn't make the TV evening news. What a screw-up fire marshall and cowardly governor. The fire marshall should be fired for incompetence. The governor should lose any chance of reelection. One can hardly generalize about everybody in Texas, but hopefully this case will make law enforcement, including the courts, much more careful in the...

Exercise at least 4 hours before you plan to go to sleep. Then try some relaxation techniques. Tell him you really like him and want to spend time with him, but you will only do so when he is sober. He does have a big problem, and you probably don't want to take on his problem, which is what you will be doing if you decide to be together. Go to alanon for family members of alcoholics and see what advice they give you. Be careful.

This is difficult to quantify, but we know it happens all the time. Also it is a matter of degree. We agree with others about the basic facts, but we have our own personal ideas about the motivations. It makes you wonder if anyone can ever really be 'objective' about anything. Our beliefs definitely color our perceptions. I'd say: all the time.

In your opinion, would the number of people who embrace religion be more, less, or the same if religion wouldn't have as its chief appeal the frightening concept of "Hell-Fire"?
If "you catch more flies with honey than vinegar" is true, which I think it is, Christianity should put more emphasis on the positive aspects of the faith. That said, most people won't even consider the faith unless given a good reason, like avoiding hell-fire. Putting it together, I think the initial hell-fire has to be quickly followed by a much stronger presentation of the...

Alcohol will suppress your natural instincts to protect yourself. So you will do things dangerous to yourself when you are under the influence. This is not bravery in the heroic sense, but more like being too dumb to take care of yourself. Drunks get hurt this way.

Should you answer a insulting question
Generally, no. If you engage in discussing it, you give it credibility. But the urge to defend oneself is strong, so you have to be careful. You may be able to convince other people that the questioner is way off, but you will probably not get the questioner to change his mind.
If you can "out insult" your detractor, maybe you will want to go this way, but it is dangerous, so...

It may be best, in an ideal world, to work it out, but in reality it may be better to go your separate ways. Perhaps after many years pass the desire for reconciliation may emerge, or perhaps not. I would think having good strong loving relationships in your life is important, and if your sibling isn't among them, it is too bad but not the end of the world.

Once when the merchants were in the temple selling animals for sacrifice, He got angry and knocked over all the tables and exclaimed that they had make His Father's house into a den of thieves. It was a righteous anger, incited by the sin of others, because of course Jesus never sinned.

I agree with Olbermann and Jonathan Alter. It is absolutely reprehensible / terrible for the Republicans to blatantly misrepresent the end of life part of the bill. Blind Dates are risky, emotionally, if you don't have the right attitude going in. Figure it as a longshot that probably won't come in, a whimsical activity, a "just for the hell of it" kind of thing.

Do the wildfires in California have you worried?
Everybody has their own "brand" of natural disaster to deal with. Ecologically, wildfires are beneficial to the ecosystem, clearing out dead stuff and allowing for a new cycle to start. Of course, people living in fire danger areas should take proper precautions, clearing a wide perimeter of brush from their structures and using the right kind of building materials, shingles, etc.

This weekend is 40th anniversary of Woodstock. Were you there? Are you old enough to remember? Or all you know about it comes from history book?
I was in high school at the time, and we all heard about it, but not so much when it actually happened as when the album came out. We were in SoCal and that is a long way from NY. CSN&Y were big, and Jimi Hendrix had kind of a niche audience. We listened to the album a lot.

Do you think some people Drink to much sometimes, when they are feeling insecure?
Yes. Some people drink too much when they are feeling insecure. Or when they are overwhelmed by their problems and want to hide from them. It's a huge problem. More families are broken from alcohol abuse than from all other drugs combined. The medical community needs to be much more aggressive in promoting treatment.

puppy dog, carnation flowers, pc computer, seventh year anniversary, there must be a category name for these redundancies. I think they work well for emphasis; I do not find them too offensive. Sometimes childish-sounding, so that might be a useful trait. I'm having a difficult time thinking of other examples. bunny rabbit, space astronaut, ???

I cope with stress really bad and become an emotional wreck. I find it really hard to control and I'm pushing alot of people away from me. How can I deal with this?
You could try psychotherapy; if your insurance covers it, just give it a try. Or you could learn meditation or yoga. I've started yoga and I think it's really great for focusing your attention and getting your body in good alignment. I would not recommend taking any medications for it. Perhaps just vigorous exercise like aerobics would help you. Or even just long, brisk walks to...

How does, the nitty-gritty-of-it, a magnifying glass work?
When light strikes the boundary of two different media that it is passing through, such as air or glass or water, when it strikes this boundary at an angle not 90 degrees, the light is deflected off course to one side. This is because the light is absorbed and released by the atoms of the medium, and some media are more densely populated with atoms. (have you ever seen a drinking straw look...

Is "pride" in a person's race racist regardless of the race, considering that it's just how they were born and no more an accomplishment than it is a crime?
I think there is a difference between healthy pride in one's race and racism. True, race isn't an accomplishment, but it does put you in a group with which you are identified, like it or not. Healthy pride in race would celebrate the achievements and history and traditions of those people. Racism focuses on hatred, pure ugly hatred of others based on their skin color. There is a...

Everyone (everyone sane at least) agrees what is right and what is wrong. It is built into us; it is our conscience. (At least it starts out that way. Aren't your instructor and textbook helping you learn how to do this? Isn't there an example in the textbook to model your answer on? Maybe you just want to check the solution you've already worked out, I hope.

How much stock do you actually put into the opinions you receive on AB?
Reading answers and comments here is an exercise in discrimination (in the good sense, finding the differences). Some responses are unbelievable. Some are trivial. Some seem to have some substance, but here you must use your experience and reason to sort them out. I almost never value an AB opinion higher than my own. But I do run into lots of interesting ideas and opinions.
