AVI is a file format extension, just like mpg, mpeg, mp3, etc. It's a pretty common file extension, so if your media player isn't playing it properly, the file may be corrupt. Otherwise, the player may need to be updated or you can use any of the many free media players available....

Unfortunately, Apple's track record with iPod battery life is spotty. They have a pretty good replacement policy, from what I've read, so if it really bothers you, you may want to contact them.
