Answer to:
In the shower/tub you primarily use, which way do you turn the faucet to get hot water?
I clicked the wrong poll thingy...
It is supposed to be right for cold, left for hot - but it got plumbed in wrong so we pull the level right for hot and back round to left for cold.
(In the basins and sinks we have one lever for hot, and one for cold)

Your religion/belief system is...
"Other"
... It is transient, evolving, changing, sceptical, honest and questioning. In some ways it is open, in others (morality) it is very closed and definite. It's a web of beliefs - if I remove or change one of my beliefs, the whole system is not going to crash down around me.

How can you tell if you have dyslexia?
Take a proper test given by an educational psychologist, or other professional!
I got until the age of 19 with absolutely no idea at all that I was dyslexic. My teachers, who are supposed to know the signs, had so far not picked up on it.
That test is the only way to tell for sure - Yes you can go on line and look for the signs, and that is all very helpful, but a test should be done...

Do american fathers care about their daughters honor? if yes, then why don't they teach them not to have sex before marriage?
Who says they don't? Just because some of their daughters CHOOSE of their own free will to have sex out of wedlock, does in no way imply their fathers have not told them/advised them/tried to inspire them to only have sex in marriage.
Other fathers (now I am taking this worldwide) think there are more important things than somebody's close minded view of 'Honor' as the most important trait a...

Does anyone here actually believe the stories in the Bible?
Yeah, I believe some of them, to a certain extent.
I also believe that others are portraying real events, but have been either exaggerated, or have been enhanced; or have been mistranslated; or have been written reterospectively inspired by fables and stories after the date... this last one would be my explanation for the Red Sea story.

I will be going to a bar with friends... Last year I went to my S/O's sister's NYE party.
I used to love NYE, would always do something big, it was THE party night for me. I just can't be bothered anymore, and wouldn't mind just going to my cousins house to play some games in my PJs.

How is Boxing Day celebrated?
In the UK it is an extension of Christmas Day in the sense that it involves seeing family and friends (probably those who weren't seen on Christmas Day), eating and drinking. It's another family day (probably a more lazy one than Christmas).
Often people will go to watch the Boxing Day football/soccer match - although in recent years (certainly wasn't this way when I was younger and I am...

Facebook rolled back many of their more radical site changes after their end users threatened to leave over them. Will AnswerBag do so too?
I think they will, I hope they will... I can't help but think it would be a bad move to not listen. I am guessing they made the changes because they think they are doing what their consumers and potential future consumers want. If they now see that they had it all wrong, and consumers DON'T want these things, maybe they will revoke them.

Has the UK gone too far in developing its "special relationship" with the US, to the detriment of its relations with mainland Europe?
You know, I don't think that the US helps Britain's place in Europe. However, whether they like it or not (!) we are part of the EU and as such we still have a very workable relationship with the rest of the EU which cannot be taken away just by our relationship with the US.
It makes more sense to be part of the EU, but to not restrict ourselves to it - and seek a tie with the US. Who, to be...

Some Americans seem so perfect, they look picture perfect to all times, and act perfect all the time, neat and tidy, how do they get like that?
You just described my best friend.. she is American. She got like that by having a mega rich Daddy to fund the illusion of perfection and an image obsessed "Mom" to teach her the art of the illusion of perfection.

Why do dogs sniff other dog’s butts to say hello, why don’t they just bark in their face or something?
Because by sniffing butts they can identify another dog. Dogs release an anal discharge which has its own unique scent. They're not going to get that kind of "introduction" and identification of another dog just from barking =)

There is no such thing as too soon to be talking to guys again...
It might be too soon for you to think about, or being, another relationship. Only you will know when you feel ready for that. If this was a harsh break up, or you have unresolved issues, or still have feelings for your ex - then I am betting that this isn't the time to date again. Talking to guys, and hanging out with...

I think so... I always try to put a =) into my conversations, so I don't (hopefully) come across in a way other than I intend to be. It may help to see the personality/tone/emotions behind words.
We rely so much on non-verbal cues everyday, it can be hard to adjust to not having them on the internet!

I think, probably, yes it is in a way.
You can argue both sides about whether it constitutes slavery or not very well. Different definitions & different theories have contradictory views on the issue. Both sides are well supported. Whether paid highly or not, its a little too close to slavery for me to be completely comfortable with it really.

I think it should be banned in the classroom. Aside from putting a great emphasis on actually ensuring that kids are given a big enough vocabulary to express themselves without slang, teenagers need to learn when it is acceptable and when it isn't (work).
I use slang, but I also know when I can use it, and when it does me no favours at all to use it. If teenagers aren't learning...

There are so many variables... I know that my sister has an easier life as a single parent than she did when she was living with the children's dad.
However - I imagine it being harder, on average, to be a single parent than part of a married couple (assuming that both in the marriage contribute positively to the household).

Haha I have that thought too... If you don't want to know enough about me to read my profile, the part where it says I only accept friend requests from people I have interacted with, then why want to be my friend?!
Maybe I am just being grumpy and should accept everyone!

Due to a job offer I am planning to move to Bradford in England. Some guy told me it was a cultured and very attractive city, bordered by green hills and forest. He said it was like a "des res" for Londoners to spend thier weekends there. Is this true?
I don't like Bradford, the worst area I have visited in England was also an area of Bradford. I am from London and don't know anybody who has spent a weekend in Bradford.
However, it is bordered by countryside, there are some lovely villages and places to go nearby, it is cosmpolitan, has historic buildings and parts of the city are very pretty. Parts are ugly and to be avoided -...

Can someone please explain what the heck 'predictors of beaconicity' means? (Huh?)
It is the factors that might lead a local authority to be rewarded under the Beacon Scheme, which I believe is a scheme which endeavours to identify the excellence occuring within some local authorities, so that other local authorities can learn from them.
I don't think even most of the government knows what it means, its stupid.

That's his reason?! You don't need to be friends with him - actually, if he won't talk to you because you're not popular than he has already proven to you that he is not your friend, and is a pretty shallow person too.

Where I live, the weatherman said that it was 10 degrees colder than normal this morning. Is this an example of global warming?
Weather (the temporary temperature and conditions in your local area) and Climate (long-term manifestations of weather and other atmospheric conditions of any given region or country) are different.
So it neither proves nor disproves arguments relating to global warming/climate change. It would be a moot point to argue otherwise =)

Yes, all of the above! People come here and ask questions for a variety of reasons, and you have probably noted most of them.
I would also add:
Because they want to rant,
Because they want to preach,
Because they enjoy discussions,
Because they want to wind people up the wrong way =)

The unfriendliest area was Cornwall in South West England. I really don't believe that I am imagining it when I say that as soon as they heard my accent, they became dismissive and rude.
The friendliest would be the town my first university was in (in South East England). I guess because it was a university town, so everyone under the age of 25 was just so friendly and chatty.

No.. democracy is democracy, the second it begins turning into a state of rule by an elite group, then it is ceases to be a democracy. You can't have a bit of one and a bit of the other, in my opinion.
That might be occuring in many countries! And many countries of course claim they are democratic when in fact they are not. I don't think there is some inevitble evolution though.

I have never done any of those things, because I understand it is just a holiday (one with Pagan roots and Pagan traditions as gets said time and time again blah blah) and that holiday pay and discounts have nothing to do with Jesus. I feel sorry for anyone with so much anger about Christianity...

It's rediculous to assume that the moment a wedding ring is placed on your finger you lose the ability to appreciate beauty. It's human nature to find people attractive. Marriage doesn't stop that human nature, it just hopefully stops you acting on it.

My girlfriend got really drunk and kissed another guy she was trying to believe was me she cant remember at all (im in a ldr) she knows she made a mistake and told me as soon she found out and she has decided to not go out until i come back help
I never believe people when they say they were too drunk to know what they were doing. However, whether she is being honest or not it is clear how desperate she is to have you back, I guess it wouldn't hurt to give her another shot. If you can forgive it and move past it.
If you will just keep bringing it up, or have it affect your relationship - then it may be kinder for both you and...

Has President Obama adopted the right strategy on Afghanistan?
So.. I have asked myself this question many times over, since he first hinted at his new Strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
It needed some developing, and he has devloped it, but I don't think it is developing in the right way. I am entirely unconvinved that increased troop numbers (whether 30,000 or 100,000) are the way to have the kind of success in Afghanistan that he wants. They...

You won't get a great answer from Answerbag on this one, most of the other answers here have been very good, which is unusual for AB... many people think they know what liberalism is, they don't. They buy the hype.
You can't really describe it in a nutshell but I will try my best:

Shooting targets I assume? ... It does sound like a fun family day out. If its controlled, and safe, then sure I think it is acceptable.
Shooting animals, no I don't think that's acceptable. I am quite heavily anti-guns (I guess because I am British) but I do see the sporting value in controlled (rifle) shooting.

I think cannabis...
Research (mind you, there is always some kind of research which contradicts everything else and you never know what to believe) says that even pure cannabis smoke is much worse than tobacco smoke for the lungs.
Adding to that the psychological effects (which I believe are real, I have experienced them).

How do you react when someone is rude to you?
It depends on the situation, how I am expected to react (in some jobs you just have to grin and bare it), who was rude and why etc.
Mostly, I will say "excuse me?" in that objectory tone just to let them know I find them rude, in the first instance.

which pronoun is the best to use in this context, him, her or them?
i find this problematic sometimes.
They are all equally acceptable....
Often the words 'them' or 'they' is used in cases in which it applies to both men or women, or a person of an undescribed gender. It is called the 'singular they' and is acceptage usage.

It isn't just on TV.. but on some websites too there may be a warning aimed at Aboriginal and other indigenous people and a "click to enter" button.

I would like the salesperson to smile and say "Come and find me if you need anything" or words to that effect... If I say I am just looking, it is because I don't want his help, or want him attempting to sell to me.
I have told pushy sales people, who still insist on helping, that I will leave the store if they try to sell me anything. And, still they persist - so I have left.

Why is it that some women wear a very low cut shirt and then get offended when they catch your glance? Not stare, glance. She might as well been wearing a neon sign that said "Look at these"
Not glance, but it would if you stared or commented.. I would really regret my choice of top and spend the rest of the day or night wishing I had chosen to wear something a bit more decent!

Did you work during your first year of college? Do you wish you had/hadn't?
Like work-work, or study work?
I didn't work first year - although I did for the rest. The first year was the easiest so I wish I had worked them, and saved some money to lift the burden on my second year.
In terms of study work, I did looooads and wish I had done less!

What do you do on Christmas Eve?
Christmas Day?
Well, Christmas Eve day will usually be at home preparing food for tomorrow and baking, wrapping presents and popping out to buy last minute things. In the evening the family will have a nice dinner - then I go out to a bar or a club with friends.
Christmas Day we have all the family come over to ours, and eat, drink and play games. Then in the evening my sister and I have our boyfriends...

Yeah... I love festivals, but after a day or two the toilets are so vile that going to the loo in them is not possible. So often the women will disappear off somewhere secluded to do what they have to do in the bushes. That's like the only instance in which I've had to do it.

Answer to:
If something makes no sense to you at all do you speak up and say so or remain silent because you don't want people to think you don't "get it"....especially if whatever it is seems to make a whole lotta sense to them?
I think it depends on both how important it is that I get it right there and then, and whether I even care. Sometimes I speak up, sometimes I don't.
I didn't always speak up in class at university if I didn't get something, for example. I didn't want to look like the idiot. I just looked into it a little more in my own time, and worked it out for myself.

Answer to:
What kind of underwear should you wear under leotards so that it doesn`t show?
I always found it best to not wear any underwear besides a bra (sports bras can look awful under leotards, and I found a regular, non padded or wired, bra with skinny straps to be fine since the leotard holds it all in anyway), and actually for dance exams we weren't allowed to wear underwear at all anyway - because it will always show to some degree.

Why do home made Indian meals never taste as good as the ones you get in a restaurant? Even when you follow the recipes from Indian cook books to the letter.
Oh no I find the exact opposite... ones in restaurants, or from take-aways are never as nice as home made curries for me.
I think its the ghee they use in restaurants, and the additives. I don't like them, and I don't use them.

No never... you know, if you had kicked up a stink at the time and refused burnt chicken wings not only would have probably have got away with a free meal, and better service to keep you happy, but they may have given you a free future meal or desert out of it too! (Although, by the sound of your awful time you probably wouldn't have wanted that anyway!)

I don't really like effigies. I think there are better ways to go about things, more powerful ways to go about things and more respectful ways to go about things (even if the target is dispicable - be the better person).
I wouldn't say "grow up" just, maybe, "wise up".

Some people don't think! If they don't agree, or their brain cells don't stretch to understanding it, its nonsense.

One of the biggests pricks I have ever known was murdered. This is the first time since he died that I have ever referred to him with that word. Do you oppose civil trials for al-Qaeda?"I consider [trial by jury] as the only anchor ever yet imagined by man, by which a government can be held to the principles of its constitution." --Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Paine, 1789 Your thoughts?
A civil trial isn't ideal, I think.
However, the other options will never be considered by some of the Western states, especially America. If you give anything other than a civil trial, you in effect award a certain status to al-Qaeda - they move from criminals, to a legitimate organisation. If they move to this level, to that of armed forces, they will get the status and protections...

Yes they are, as is liposuction, rhinoplasty, face surgery and skin lightening treatment - you name it. The cosmetic surgery industry is booming out there.
However, it is only halal/acceptable if the surgery is to counter immense emotional pain or grief, or to reverse damage from an accident. Simply having surgery to have "perfect" breasts is not allowed.

I think that it most definitely makes it less democratic in some instances. If the public want to vote in a president for a third term, and are prevented from doing that, then yes that is an abuse of their democracy.

The problem is, a rediculously high number of the CCTV cameras either don't work or aren't recording. So, beyond deterrence, there is no point them even being there.
Answer to:
A heterosexual couple in the uk were refused a civil partnership, was this right?
Well yeah, civil partnerships are for same sex couples and heterosexual couples aren't legally eligible.
Straight couples can get married anyway, why would they even want to get a civil partnership? Do you know their reason? Either way, they would have the same rights and status regardless of whether they had a marriage or civil partnership, so its not the end of the world =)

Can babies hear in the womb? If we played classical music to it while in the womb via noise cancelling speakers, would the baby hear it?
Yes.
Babies can hear clearly in the womb at 20 weeks. Because of that, and because it is actually quiet in the womb, all you really need is to play music in the room at a reasonable volume from a stereo, there is no need to place speakers or headphones near bump.
A lot of experts (although opinion is divided) believe that playing classical music to the baby stimulates the brain in a way...

Should Britain retain such a large, expensive standing army? Or would it be better to scale down the army & transfer the funds to the Police & other emergency services?
My view is that we do need a large, expensive standing army. What we don't need is to be out in Iraq and Afghanistan. Take the crazy money spent out there, invest it back into the armed forces in equipment, training, invest in barracks and more importantly invest in post-conflict and post-discharge rehabilitation & PTS recovery.
Then all those other countless millions would do well...

I'm not dying to get married... I don't feel that I need to do it for my relationship and commitment to be of value.
My other half though, is. He won't have children outside of marriage, and a Church wedding means a lot to him, which I respect, so if we last then maybe I will have no problem getting married. Which, I am not against. Just a little indifferent.

Nope. It is entirely dependent upon the relationship.

Some no more than a handshake or a verbal greeting.
Things need to be tailored to the relationship, occasion, expectations and what the other person is comfortable with.

Nope.
At 13 a person may have criminal culpability, but he is not emotionally or intellectually mature. His brain hasn't developed. He is a child and should be treated as such, not cast into a cell for eternity. The boy he is at 13 is different to the boy he will be at 15, 18, 25. He isn't beyond help. Another answer to the list... it just means a man.
However, depending perhaps on region or person saying it "bloke" can have other interpretations. To say someone is "blokey" would not necessarily mean "manly" for instance. But its a subtle thing that I don't know how to best explain.
Anyway, no, it is not an insult.

Is England loosing its identity? What kind of country are you becoming? London is becoming slumville, why are the English who have colonized so many countries allowing filth to come in?
I had my answer in my mind as I read this question, and I was disappointed to see it was you who had asked this Catherine, but it would not be right for me to modify my answer simply because it is you who has asked.
That's bollocks. I have lived in London, worked in London, studied in London, have friends dotted all over the city - I know it and adore it - it is not becoming...

A girl at my brothers high school came to school infected with H1N1 this week but got sent home! Her parents think she should have been allowed to stay in school because she was wearing a mouth mask.Would u let your kid stay in school if she was allowed?
No... pretty selfish, you can't risk affecting other people's education for the sake of one. If the mum was that bothered, she should have asked for work to be sent home, so that the daughter could carry on studying. Better than nothing.

Realistic people.. although sometimes I think that stories and ideas are just told so much better in the form of cartoon. It works in a way people acting can't.

Some already have. Not many... but there have been some, and there are rumours that it will be possible to get more to change sides. But I do believe that a whole load of the non-Taliban insurgents, and "accidental guerrillas" in Afghanistan would defintely consider changing sides.
It's the Afghan way.

Stay away from him.
A man who visits prostitutes does not respect women, does not respect himself, and does not care for or respect the incredibly vulnerable women who have been failed by our society. Instead, he uses them.
He is not worth your time, energy, or love in my opinion.

What is your honest opinion on England and/or Britain as a whole?
Well...
I feel so incredibly lucky to be born here. I really do, when I think of all the other places I could have been born in, surely this is one of the best. I am happy here, I think the scenery is beautiful, the opportunities are great.
I think there are also a lot of very crappy things about England too. Same with any country though. I'd definitely like it a whole lot more if...

Actually yes - because I have never been asked for money by a beggar who didn't lie to me to get the money or be aggressive to me to get the money.
That is annoying. I have no problem giving what I have, none at all - I want to do it, but show me enough respect to not lie to me or attempt to scare me into it.

I have the worst memories of Corfu International...

Sorry Sexyrabit, but I think that's a bad idea, I don't think it will work, it wouldn't be financially or practically viable (I assume) and if it is compulsory then we have a human rights, and domestic legal, issue!
Although... I like the idea of scaring kids straight, something which the parents can ask to be enforced on behalf of their 'wayward' child.

Do you try to avoid giving your baby a name that already belongs to someone you personally know? For example, you wouldn't name your child James if you had a friend name James or you wouldn't name her Trish because your co-worker is named Trish, etc, etc
I would try to avoid that, and if I disliked the person then I would definiely avoid that... which is why I hope I never end up working with somebody called Dominic, Benjamin, Oliver or Noah!
It also extends to pets' names, children of friends, people I knew and disliked when I was a child etc.

I don't like them, in all honesty.
That is beside the point though - they're good, solid names (if a little surnamey), they probably won't result in bullying, or damage their future prospects and so if you and your husband like them, that's all that matters.

The word comes from the Old French word "jouel" in the 13th Century, and before that "jocale" in latin. It is unrelated to the word "jew". It comes from the latin for "plaything", which relates to the initial idea of jewellery as something which has...

Because (regardless of whether you believe that wouldn't be enough for the Taliban or not) you can't just give any group of people a country!! Apparently, one in 20 British school kids thinks that Adolf Hitler is the German national football coach, Auschwitz is a theme park and the Blitz was a clean-up operation carried out after the war. What does this say about the UK education system?
Wow... Do they not teach WW2 anymore? That's not even embarassing, its really worrying.
Mind you, what ages were the kids surveyed? That could be important... I mean, if they teach WW2 in year 4, and 1 in 20 of the kids were year 3 then you can forgive it.

This really annoys me. It annoyed me when Labour did it. Cameron's U-turn has REALLY annoyed me.
I can't stand affirmative action - which, basically, is exactly positive discrimination. So, we bring more women in under a far from meritocratic system to make it more representative. Then what? More Muslims, Sikhs, LGBT? Where does it end?

Ladies, What do you think about guys who work out? Self-absorbed? Egotistical? Or do you have an appreciation of it? What is the right amount of time a guy should spend working out?
I don't think self absorbed or egotistical - I think its important to work out, or at the very least take care of yourself. But I wouldn't be interested in someone who went to the gym for a couple hours a day, every day. I think its not really that conducive to a balanced lifestyle and multiple interests. I LOVE it!!! It may also make it seem more relevant, for those who for whatever reason haven't appreciated it before. I hope there are few such people though.
I am not wearing one right now, but I have a poppy pin (rather than the paper one) on my jacket and am wearing a poppy appeal wristband too.
I love the Poppy Appeal.

Im looking for different opinions on wine...i think its more classy for a romantic dinner. Any recommendations on the brand/name of the best tasting wine u've had?
I love wine, but usually with every kind of wine there will be some brands or bottles I haven't been fond of. I have never tried a Châteauneuf du Pape wine I haven't liked though, and I have also never liked any more than I have liked a Châteauneuf du Pape!

Answer to:
Do you believe in luck?
No... but I believe in objects which can make you feel positive, and that way you kinda create your own luck.
Like when I feel like I need luck I wear my Nanna's ring. I know it won't make good luck come to me, but it makes me feel more positive and so maybe I will create my own luck, so to speak.

Do or did you ever find yourself questioning your relationship with s/o that you've been with for over a year?
That's what I have spent the last 3 months doing! I don't think it necessarily means the relationship is doomed, but the questions we ask ourselves should be taken seriously.

Why do some occupants of Guantánamo detention center would rather prolong their stay than be sent to maximum security prisons on the US mainland, according to camp officials?
If you were accused of being a terrorist plotting against the US, would you want to be locked up with Americans? What the guards at Guantanamo have done is bad, but I wouldn't like to imagine what American inmates would do to them.

Because we want to know that the men are thinking what we want them to think (invariably, good things about us)!

People don't understand the definition of either, that much is clear enough from some of the incoherent musings and rants posted to AB.

If you do not like the bnp can you say why in more than two sentences please,as i read questions like this and no one actually explains why?
Some of my reasons:
1) The BNP is racist and fascist.
2) The BNP lies and manipulates statistics to create something completely distorted and often unreal.
3) The BNP attempts to create fear through this exaggeration, misrepresentation and generalisation. A BNP quote: "Wherever there are large numbers of young Muslim men, groups of them team up to lure girls - often as young as...

Do you get flu shots every year, every few years, once in a while or never?
Never.

Answer to:
Why are people so hyped & scared about flu this year? It seems even more than usual with constant media reminders to get vaccinated, rigorous hand cleaning, etc. Where I work they have installed ubiquitous hand sanitizing stations. Is it really that bad?
Well, I think the hype is a good thing.
Its just good practice to rigorously clean your hands and use hand santiser. Forget the flu, you can catch so many nasty bugs - some quite dangerous and debilitating - from public and work places. You can't trust others to wash their hands after they use the bathroom, but you can make sure you don't ingest the bugs from *their* stomachs by...

After a 7 year friendship is it possible to start dating my best friend and if it doesn't work out have us still be friends?
Possible but unlikely. It is also unlikely that you will be able to regain the same level of friendship you once had, even if you still manage to remain on friendly terms afterwards. Not saying impossible, just unlikely.
It's a big risk, and you have to work out if it is worth it. I took it once before, and never will again. If you stay friends, he will be there maybe for life. If you...
