Do you have any real evidence that kids today aren't learning as much as kids 20 or 30 years ago? Or is it just baseless opinion?
As an educator, this is a question I often ponder. The standardized tests we use now to "measure" how much kids are learning were different 20 - 30 years ago. How can we objectively compare the two? Kids today are also more likely to come from hectic home environments where both parents work or they have only one parent. This also changes the learning of children, how many adults can recall...

I need a consensus. Do most cats like or dislike being petted while eating? Mine likes me to sit with and pet her, she won't eat if I don't. She's deaf, so I think she thinks her brother will steal up from behind her and take her food, but I'm not sure.
Is she a young cat?
Mine started out only eating if I was sitting right there, but as they have aged they stopped needing me around to eat.
Maybe if you moved brother's food bowl to another room and taught him to only eat there it would help her to feel more at ease?

Are there any devices i can buy to prevent a small area rug from moving or scooting over the carpet? My rug is about 30 inchs x 50 inches in a high traffic area, laid over the carpet. But it moves out of position every day. Where can i get such a device?
You need a non-slip rug pad.
They are usually sold a stores that sell area rugs, home improvement stores, and stores like Target, Walmart, Bed, Bath and Beyond . . .
You put it under the area rug to prevent it from moving, and to protect the floor underneath from friction marks.

What are the ways through which one can educate children about sex?
Depends on the child's age.
The youngest ones need to be taught about boundaries and privacy.
Respect for one's body and the bodies of others should be taught.

you start out loving dad and looking up to him, thinking he is the greatest guy in the world and able to do anything
then you start getting older and discover he isn't perfect and all knowing, you start to take him with a grain of salt
for awhile he becomes this person who is around, but kinda at the edge of things, he works all the time or does stuff around the house...

How do we know the Bible is complete? We know it contains God's word, but does it contain ALL of God's word? How do you know?
We know for a fact that the current Christian bible was comprised of books that a Vatican Council determined to be the most spiritual and complete.
As a Catholic I have been taught to believe that these spiritual fathers were guided by God. However, history has proven that the Church is an organization made of imperfect humans who do not always follow the teachings of Jesus.

Are you as alarmed and as worried as I am, by the number of folks who author questions on AB, who can't correctly compose a simple sentence in English? Some of the spelling and syntax I've seen is both appalling and atrocious!
I am actually used to the "creative" spelling. Maybe it is because I teach, but I am able to decode most writing meant to be English. In fact, many times I don't even notice until I re-read it.

I went for a marketing degree in undergrad b/c thats what my Dad pushed me to do. But I realize now I would really like to become a therapist or psycologist and help people with their issues. What should I do?
Check out your local universities, see which one has a good psychology department, what the requirements are, and how you can pay. Some univeristies will let you take 1-2 courses a semester, allowing you to attend Saturday or late night sessions. After a few years, you can earn your new degree while working to pay for it.
Good luck.

I've learned tons from people who are "old", older people have already "been there and done that" if you are planning on a major life decision, ask an older person first. Chances are, they can give you advice that will save you a lot of time and energy.

How Do I Hide My Man Boobs And What Type Of Exercise Gets Rid Of Them?
Lose weight.
Add muscle and tone your upper body with a proper work out.

I don't think you can without causing real harm to your body. [As in damaging internal organs or messing up your metabolism.]
I would try 20 pound in 4 weeks.
Switch to a low calorie diet, split it up into 3-4 SMALL meals a day, and exersize at least 1 hour a day - your normal activity does not count, you need burn 1,000 MORE calories than you eat to lose 1 pound.
DO NOT...

Hello everyone , I just moved to a new appartement and i'm looking to choose a color theme for my new room ... but i really can't choose between 2 themes .... I just want something dark and sensual so :leopard room or black&red one?
Go black and red, it is classier and will look fashionable for a lot longer.
Leopard prints age poorly and tend to look tacky in a couple years, also they never stay in fashion very long.
If you really like the animal prints, use the black and red theme and throw some zebra prints here and there.
Good Luck!

How do I hem a knit tee shirt and keep the bottom flat. Every time I hem one no matter how much care I take, it goes all wavy along the bottom.
Have you tried a temporary backing that washes away? It is sold in fabric stores and is used for hemming difficult materials, perhaps it can keep the knit material from stretching out whe you sew it.

I know someone who is going away for 2 week and leaving his cats at home, with someone going round twice a day. I'm disgusted, should I be?
Cat are not like dogs you can leave them alone without hurting them as long as someone is checking on them everyday and they have food and water they are fine. I don't let my cats go outside ever, too many cars and dogs, plus cats are Very Stressed when forced to leave their own territory. Sending them to a pet hotel would likely cause more harm than good.

Why, in general, are dogs more friendly to unfamiliar people than cats are?
Dogs are naturally social animals, so a dog sees ALL people as other "dogs" and will try to relate to them.
Cats are not social animals [pack animals], they see their special people as "mommy" and other humans are "strangers". So, they don't want to relate to you until they are certain you aren't dangerous.
That is a very general explanation. A...

Well, starving someone will make them lose weight, but will probably do more damage to the people's health.

HELP! I've been bitten by the camping bug but I have stuck to sites with well equiped facilities. I'd now like to try more isolated spots, how do I know I'm being safe with all essential emergency equipment I could need. Is there a rule book?
I would try to find a boy scout [or girl scout] handbook for camping, those are usually quite complete and easy to read.
If you're planning on going somewhere VERY remote, I'd recommend having some sort of satelite beacon/phone for emergencies. They can be invaluable if you need immediate medical attention [sprained or broken leg, snakebite, etc].

Huh? Does that mean all the sugar packed foods will have warnings? What about artificial flavors? And tuna should have mercury warnings. And soy products should have warnings for guys [too much estrogens bad for males]. And cabbage and beans should have warnings about gaseous emissions [greenhouse gases, bad for ozone]

What's it called when you have a type of acne that's hard and hurts to touch? I think it's called a cyst but I'm not sure. How do you get rid of them?
What you have is called a nodule, it happens when the follicle collapses.
A normal zit happens when your pore gets infected and blocked. The follicle or hair root inside that pore is under pressure. If it collapses you get a nodule which is hard to the touch and hurts. A cyst is the next step up in inflammation and infection.
Well, that's a simple explanation.

Okay, a few things:
1. Walk around the outside of the house, look for holes, cracks, or other "doors" into the house. STOP UP THESE HOLES. Use spray foam insulation if you can't board these up.
2. Remove large bushes and vines from the outside of the house. These provide shelter to the vermin who are coming in.

What should I do? I seem to always find my self very alone i have tried to make friendships and they never last for long, i always end up hurt. I AM so tired of walking through this life by myself.
Where do you look for friends? Maybe you need to change your locations, perhaps you should join some clubs? If you have hobbies, try to find some people who share your interests, search the internet for forums and online chats.
It may sound corny, but maybe you could get a pet? Something else alive that can keep you company at home? It helps more than you may think.
Good luck.

Very tiny green bugs have attacked my hanging baskets of annuals. How can I identify bugs & get rid of them?
They are likely aphids, you can do several things.
First, take your hanging baskets and hose the plants off, try to wash off as many of the little suckers as possible.
You can buy insecticidal soap, follow the directions to apply, the soap suffocates the bugs.
If your annuals are inside, put them outside for awhile and hope some aphid predators [green lacewings, ladybugs] come by for...

Why Do We Love Vampires So Much?
Because they are like superheroes; they look human but have superhuman powers. They have special weaknesses [superman and kryptonite ring a bell?]. And since they were once human and still look human it is easier to get an audience to relate to them, or be afraid of them - that whole danger-in-disguise thing.

Answer to:
For believers, what is your conception of God? (Nonbelievers, feel free to comment.)
An extremely difficult question. I usually percieve God as a loving parent. He has a sense of humor and is wants what bets for us, even if we can't see why it's best at the time.
However, that doesn't fully cover it, nor do I believe I know all and understand all.
[sigh] Like I said, hard question.

Religious conservatives – when gay people say that being gay is not a choice, you don’t believe us. Is it because you believe that it has to be a choice, since God wouldn’t condemn something that wasn't, or do you just think we're lying?
I think many religious conservatives believe that sex was created by God for reproduction, which would make homosexuality pointless. It is also why the Catholic Church says birth control is a sin.
I am only speaking from many years of Catholic school and catechism. Perhaps the ideology had changed since then.

Why are Americans in general such unhealthy eaters?
Because junk food and fast food have all the things our brains like; sugar, fat, and salt.
Humans spent a long time subsisting on what they could grow, hunt, and find. Finding enough to eat was hard, so our brains craved high calorie foods. [sweetness is a signal that fruit is ripe, fat is a great source of calories] We like salt too because you need it to survive and it isn't...

Answer to:
If my younger brother shows no interest in sex, will this improve his chances of finding a girlfriend/wife and by how much? Don't women look up to men who will respect and love them instead of lust after their bodies which they find degrading?
That is a myth, women canlike sex as much as a men. Individuals have different sex drives, be they men or women.
He shouldn't pretend to not want sex, that could just as easily be misconstrued as him not wanting a sexual relationship at all, that he just wants to be friends.
The trick is to show an interest without being pushy or overemphisizing sex.

The Universe: Result of a Chance Accident or the Result of an Intelligent Creator?
I prefer the Intelligent Creator idea, my mind rejects that a universe where so much [if not everything] can be described by mathematics is purely random chance. I prefer the simplest explanation for such order, Some One designed it.
But that is my humble opinion and the method I have for explaining the universe as I see it. I am not adverse to other explainations.

Death is so, it is such an 'end,' so brutally honest, and in your face, don't you think, i mean, there must be something else, or does it just, end?
Even Einstein believed in some sort of "after life" because energy doesn't end, it only changes form.
I think that is a more positive way to think about it, even your energy becomes a part of your environment, some part of you still goes on.

I found a few possibilities:
-your drain under the shower is missing a trap

-the drains are incorrectly installed
you may need a professional plumber to come out and look at your drains and vents.

Do you think marrage is a struggle...and is it worth it?
Yes it is, maybe not ALL the time, but it is like anything many things in life: [house, car, pets, children, health] it needs attention and constant maintenance to keep it in good condition. The big difference with relationships is, it takes two to keep it going.
Anyone who tells you marriage is easy, is either: single, clueless, or has a very different idea of what is hard.

Has anything changed in the yard or nearby recently? New plantings? New structures? New neighbors? Dogs can hear and smell a lot more than we do, especially beagles, perhaps he is smelling/hearing something new and it frightens him.
The best I can suggest is to try to get him used to the yard again. Spend time out there, try to make reassure him, treats should work to entice him out....

Why do cats seem aloof? Does it depend on the type of cat? I'm more of a dog person myself but want to know the answer to this question.
It depends on the individual cat and How the cat was raised.
Cats aren't like dogs, dogs are social cretaures that live in groups. This means a dog only needs to see humans as other dogs, they can switch "pack leaders" because ALL humans are "dogs".
Cats need to be handled as very young kittens, they need to see humans as "MOMMY" because cats...
