About me: We will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."- Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

When we are planning for posterity, we ought to remember that virtue is not hereditary.
Thomas Paine, Common Sense, 1776

Notice that buy-bull (as in shit) and Bible are pronounced the same? Coincidence? I think not.

The essence of Christianity is told to us in the Garden of Eden history. The fruit that was forbidden was on the Tree of Knowledge. The subtext is, All the suffering you have is because you wanted to find out what was going on. You could be in the Garden of Eden if you had just kept your fucking mouth shut and hadn't asked any questions.
-- Frank Zappa, interview, Playboy, May 2, 1993

Is there an intelligent man or woman now in the world who believes in the Garden of Eden story? If you find any man who believes it, strike his forehead and you will hear an echo. Something is for rent.
--Robert Green Ingersoll (1833-1899)
American lawyer and lecturer known for his adamant support of scientific and humanistic rationalism

The church says the earth is flat, but I know that it is round, for I have seen the shadow on the moon, and I have more faith in a shadow than in the church.
-- Ferdinand Magellan

For those who believe the United States of America was founded on Christian principles or that the founding fathers, Jefferson, Washington, Madison, etc. were Christian men you could never be more wrong. It was most certainly NOT founded on such silly notions.
Consider the following:

"History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance, of which their political as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purpose."
Thomas Jefferson - to Baron von Humboldt, 1813

Please do NOT pray for my soul or pray for anything on my behalf. I'm perfectly capable of not praying on my own. --Me

"This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it."--John Adams

"The way to see by faith is to shut the eye of reason."
Benjamin Franklin -in Poor Richard's Almanac

"Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and torturous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness, with which more than half of the Bible is filled, it would be more consistent that we call it the word of a demon than the word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind.
.Thomas Paine-in The Age of Reason

"Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise."
James Madison-letter to Wm. Bradford, April 1, 1774

"The Bible is not my book, nor Christianity my profession."
-Spoken by Abraham Lincoln, quoted by Joseph Lewis
.

and finally...

"Religious controversies are always productive of more acrimony and irreconcilable hatreds than those which spring from any other cause. Of all the animosities which have existed among mankind, those which are caused by the difference of sentiments in religion appear to be the most inveterate and distressing, and ought most to be depreciated. I was in hopes that the enlightened and liberal policy, which has marked the present age, would at least have reconciled Christians of every denomination so far that we should never again see the religious disputes carried to such a pitch as to endanger the peace of society."
George Washington - letter to Edward Newenham, 1792

Additionally, "It is a fixed American opinion that whenever and wherever churches have been able to invoke the power of the state in their behalf, the effects have been disastrous to moral character, to spiritual ideals and the good order of society." Joseph Martin Dawson (1879-1973)
First executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee...and that's from a preacher.

Not related to US history:
"Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich."
[Napoleon Bonaparte]
"I am surrounded by priests who repeat incessantly
that their kingdom is not of this world, and yet
they lay their hands on everything they can get."
[Napoleon Bonaparte]
and finally...
"Eat a big plate of jambalaya, head off to the can, and meditate on this, "defecating is more productive than praying."
[Todd Adamson]

Pray and Prey...The first word is only wishing for an imaginary man to do the second word for you.

A Warning To My Readers

Do not think me gentle
because I speak in praise
of gentleness, or elegant
because I honor the grace
that keeps this world. I am
a man crude as any,
gross of speech, intolerant,
stubborn, angry, full
of fits and furies. That I
may have spoken well
at times, is not natural.
A wonder is what it is. --Wendall Berry
