If I go on an upgrade to Firefox 3, will all my old bookmarks still remain? Someone told me on the phone that I would lose them. It did not sound right. So I thought I'd ask here & see what those of you who have upgraded to Firefox 3 can tell me about it.
Erm, well, I installed it when it came out and didn't have problems for a while. But about a week or so ago, strange things started happening with my bookmarks and then they all sort of disappeared. Now when I add new bookmarks, it just overwrites the old one and populates the bookmark toolbar with duplicates. I checked out the Mozilla forum and it looks like quite a few other people are...

For me, truth trumps everything. Beneath every lie, every "win" is truth and that's what I look for. That's my world anyway..

What is the most interesting branch of science you have recently studied? Why?
Information science! Everything we do stems from information in one way or another and the ways in which we create, store, and access it are endlessly fascinating. Plus, information science is cross-disciplinary, so there's plenty of room to branch out and explore so many different things.

Answer to:
How is knowledge generated? Is it solitary, social or both?
I believe that they both inform each other. The time I spend alone builds into things that are helpful in social situations and the time I spend with friends, family, (internet!), instructs the knowledge I have as a solitary individual. Both are important by themselves, but function best together. Happy Saturday Rosie! :)

Answer to:
Is the IUD only for women who have had kids?
Any woman can use it, but it is typically easier to have it inserted if you have previously had a child since your cervix is typically more "open." They recommend that you keep it in for longer stretches of time because, a)it is expensive and it wouldn't be cost effective to take it out after, say, six months, and, b)it would be rough on your body to have it inserted only to take...
Answer to:
Have you ever hitchhiked? Have you ever picked somebody up that was hitchhiking?
Yes to both. Once a bunch of us were driving this old VW bus to Tuscon to go dancing and one of the rods blew. There were about 6 of us and we threw out our thumbs and we got picked up by a guy and his girlfriend driving a school bus to Cali.
One of my girlfriends and I once picked up a "trusty" (trust fund hippie) on our way out to some hot springs in New Mexico. We knew he was ok because...

For those who's pregnant or had been pregnant, if you were given the choice, would you prefer caesarian? or natural birth? Why to either?
Oh definitely natural. And no drugs. I think that if you're drugged up, you can't feel the contractions enough to time the pushing. The more you feel, the better you can gauge things and the quicker/easier it will go. Of course, that's just my experience. I know it's different for everyone. :)

Your very first and last concert ... When did you go? And who did you go see?
My very first concert was Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters. The Oakridge Boys opened for her. I think I was eight.
The last "big" concert I saw was Bjork and Bonny Prince Billy at Red Rocks. Beaauuuutiul show.
But I did go see Leslie and the Lys (with Mr. Pacman and Magic Cyclops) a couple of weeks ago...killa!

Ladies, will you describe your labor & delivery experience(s)?
Hm. Wow. Everyone's talking about all of the pain, but it really only hurt me during the crowning and that lasted less than a minute. I did all natural birth, too.. noooo drugs, and I think it took an hour from the time they admitted me into the hospital and when it was over. I can only hope if I do it again, it will be that easy!

What illnesses can cause one's body temperature to drop below normal?
Really bad infections (sepsis) can cause one to have very low body temps. Generally those folks are severely ill and are in bad shape. Chemicals like caffeine and nicotine can cause vasoconstriction of the peripheral arteries and make your hands cold but it probably raises or doesnt change overall temperature.

Answer to:
Why does body temperature spike before vomiting?
Vomiting is triggered by a chemoreceptor zone in the brain, certain chemicals secreted by infections or rotten food, etc. also act on the hypothalamus, which sets temperature for the body. Pyrogens may be a laymans term for these chemicals in a broad sense.

My GP has referred me to a Consultant Nephrologist for persistent (5 months) low grade UTI symptoms. I've never had any problems with my kidneys. Should I not have been referred to a Urologist?
A nephrologist can direct you to antibiotic therapy or tests that can determine if you have an anatomic problem that a Urologist (operates on bladder and kidneys) has to fix. Something like a huge stone a urologist could fix.

If someone developed noninfectious SIRS from experiencing trauma, what treatment would they need? What kind of prognosis would they have?
Generally there isnt a specific treatment for SIRS (systemic inflammatory response syndrome), the treatment usually consists of treating the trauma that causes it. Usually those folks need a lot of IVF and might need to be intubated if they have lung injury but its a self-limiting thing for the most part.

A friend of mine is a size 10 (size 8 in usa terms) and she wants a gastric bypass and she has actually found a doctor willing to do it, how can i stop this, she is thin enough as it is this is just beyond ridiculous
In the US, board certified bariatric (weight loss) surgeons will operate on those with a BMI (body mass index) above 35 if they have illnesses related to obesity, otherwise its 40 or above to qualify for an operation. someone that is 5'5'' would have to weigh about 250lbs to have a BMI of 40.
Nobody that is "thin" is getting a weight loss surgery in this country,...

Answer to:
Which is better, gastric bypass or lapband?
Gastric bypass has better proven weight loss and is better overall in helping or curing adult onset diabetes.
The lap band is safer and reversible, but involves more exercise and diet adherence or it fails. Up to 20% of folks who get the band dont lose any appreciable weight.

Does appendicitis surgery hurt if so how long doe's it take to get well
Appendicitis is very painful. Surgery to remove it is one of the very few operations where you feel better when you wake up. Keyhole=laparoscopic surgery, you can recover in one day, at least from the incision.
Answer to:
Do you know anyone who is friendly and cordial sometimes, and takes shots or swats at you at other times? You never know which person is going to show up. How long does it take you to remove yourself from the line of fire for good?
It probably takes me longer than it should. I always tend to prize the good parts of people and forgive the bad parts. But after too much of the yo-yo, I drop out for good. Life's too short to be waiting for jabs and punches! :)

If the universe is expanding what are we expanding into?
The universe was once just a seed. The "Big Bang" was the beginning of growth. Spring. We are now expanding just as a seed grows. We are one, big cosmic plant that will eventually be eaten by a cosmic cow or trampled by a cosmic 4x4. ;)
Answer to:
What is worse , Telling a white lie or hurting a person you love?
I think it depends on what the lie is protecting your loved one from. But ultimately, I've always felt in any situation (be it with loved ones, friends, co-workers) I would rather deal with the hurt of an uncomfortable truth than the pain of a lie. Truth I can work with. Trust is hard to rebuild. Great question, by the way.

I think if you are comfortable in your own skin, you can pretty much withstand any onslaught! What do you think?
Yes, and I think the key here is, "pretty much." I don't think that anyone is completely infallible and if they were, I would question their humanity. It's good to be strong and confident, but it's just as good to have feelings and sensitivities as well. It's part of the beauty of being alive.

What does a moderator do on Answerbag?
Weeeell, we moderators sift through the hundreds of flags that are submitted every day and decide whether or not to accept them, based on some general guidelines. We always try to be consistent and fair when doing this, and we get no points whatsoever for doing this.
Also, I have noticed that the act of flagging is often referred to as moderation, but the actual moderators are the ones who...

Here's what's happening:
When other ABers view your questions, they all have the ability to flag your questions as being in the "wrong category," and they are prompted to suggest a more appropriate category. If the flag is approved by a moderator, the category will be changed.

In an argument, do you believe you are always right or do you accept that you might be wrong?
I dunno. I often find myself posing an argument with a half curiosity that there could be a better way to think about something. My ego wants me to always think that I am right, but I find that being flexible in my opinions helps make me wiser in the long-run.

Why do people buy gold in times of crisis as if at the end of civilization they will be able to trade shiny metal for food?
I would think that having a bunch of gold during an economic collapse (total or otherwise) will help you simply due to the fact that peoples' memories of the economic system will not be erased if said system disappears. Because of this, there will almost always be somebody around who will see the value in trading their ham sandwich for a flake of gold. Plus, after the collapse it can only...

What are the sides of the dna ladder made of?
The "sides" of a dna ladder are most typically composed of the four molecules: adenine, cytosine, thymine, and guanine.
Answer to:
What are the "rungs" of the dna ladder made of?
The "rungs" of a dna ladder are composed of hydrogen bonds, which are composed of the intermolecular force caused between two molecules which have opposite charges. In the case of dna, these charged molecules are adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine (not to be confused with thiamine!), or A, C, G, T. Adenine and thymine pair together as do guanine and cytosine. This is about all...

I thought i was pregnant because i had breast soreness and nausea. this morning i woke up to cramps and bleeding. this will make it 4-5 wks since my last period, but i usually get my period every 3 wks. is this a miscarriage or just my period?
Unfortunately, this is something that is difficult to tell for certain. Because it is a possibility (especially because of the breast soreness and the irregular period), I would certainly go in and get checked out by your doctor. At the very least, take a pregnancy test; there could still be some of the pregnancy hormones in your system if you were, indeed pregnant.
