A friend recommended with the kiss of death, "you love Tolkien, you'll love it". I nearly didn't read it for that reason, and it's not Tolkien, but it's really well written, entertaining and involved storytelling. You will be captured by the novels! I've lost a lot of sleep because of these books, and that's always a good thing - one more chapter... ;-)

Which stories do you find hard to imagine being real, even though you heard about them because of the media? Anything reported by the media has to be taken with a grain of salt. Often, with the best of intentions, important information is excluded due to time or space constraints, which can lead to distortions or misleading conclusions. And with an agenda, the selective presentation or exclusion of information can be used to manipulate much of the public. Always be skeptical ;-)

No, there's been a number of presidents who weren't too bright, and not just in the recent past. I don't think Perry is among the brighter candidates (I live in Texas, so this isn't my first rodeo with him), but that he and his staff somehow failed to appreciate the magnitude of the task at had. It's a bit more complicated and requires more preparation than running for governor.

College graduates: Was it all worth it in the end? For me, it was. I paid my own way, and we all know how profitable a degree in English can be, but there's more to an education than the dollar sign at the end. That being said, you do have to consider the cost and how you will pay for it, your ability to support yourself either with the degree or otherwise, and the satisfaction or quality of life that will follow.

As for the death penalty, the American justice system is too flawed to allow the death penalty in all but the most extreme and heavily scrutinized cases, and then only after a total revision of the legal process...
