When was a Christmas tree EVER called a "holiday tree"? Do Jews have one? islam? Buddhists? Or is it just anti-Christian liberals?
I'm an atheist and I've never heard it called anything besides Christmas tree. Apparently the only people who call it holiday tree or stuff like that are bureaucrats who think they're doing someone a favour by doing so. And it's not in response to any complaint either - they just do it to preclude any complaints - a preemptive strike so to speak.

In your belief, can the United States as it is today, be defined as a Christian nation?
No, it cannot.
First, nations do not have religions, people do. As long as there's more than one belief in a country, it can't be said to have one religion. Some countries do have an official "national religion" but the US explicitly forbids that kind of thing in the first amendment.
Besides, how would you define a "Christian nation"? If it's a nation where people live according to the...

Of course. And I will give gifts too. After all there's nothing religious about Christmas really. It USED to be religious, but these pagan fertility rituals have lost their religious aspect for most people.

Shouldn't it be "what if God WERE one of us"?
No, not necessarily. "What if God was one of us" contemplates the possibility that God IS one of us, right now, as opposed to "what if god were one of us" which contemplates what would happen if he became one of us, but is not taking into account the possibility that he is.

Why is atheism on the increase ?
Because education is on the increase. Gods were created as a way to explain phenomena we could not understand, like lightning, volcanoes and rainbows. First off, you can't change people's mindsets just like that.
Second, probably not. You can also study the terrorists, especially the tactics they use to recruit and what drives people to join them. See what you can do to reduce the effectiveness of their recruiting tactics. Also determine what they want and try to ensure that there exists a legal/non-violent way of achieving that.

Why do people believe that the Theory of Evolution is a fact?
Because it is a fact.
Consider gravity. It too is a fact. It's also a theory, but evolution has MORE EVIDENCE supporting it than gravity does.
There has not been a single discovery that contradicts the theory of evolution. There is not a single real scientist in any field of biology who disagrees with evolution. Disagreeing with Darwin is different - in 150+ years the theory has been greatly...

Can a laptop have the same IP address when it's somewhere else?
Generally speaking, your IP address is assigned by your ISP, and you get a new one each time you connect. If you connect from somewhere else via a different ISP, you will have a different IP address. There are a few situations, such as when connecting to a VPN (virtual private network) where you will get the same IP address wherever you are, although in that situation you will actually have...

Why did the Irish Catholics put bombs? Northern Ireland is part of a democracy. They had the same rights as the protestants.
I'm writing this as a total outsider, but N.Ireland was/is not a democracy. It is ruled by a foreign power which moved its people into N.Ireland to ensure they had the support of the majority, and then treated the Catholics like shit.

Technically, in a democracy everyone votes about everything. That works great if you're a village, but in a country it's inefficient, so instead we elect representatives that seem to match our points of view and then they in turn vote on the individual matters. This has its own flaws - the need to get elected leads to corruption, as the candidates accept payments from entities which request...

Didn't Jesus Christ say that he came for sinners, but only from the Lost tribes
of Israel?
Yes he did. He explicitly told them not to go to the gentiles. That didn't sit well with Paul who was trying to create a new religion out of it among gentiles, so they made up a story that after Jesus resurrected, he changed his mind and told the apostles to take it to everyone. Doesn't explain why they didn't - they stayed in Jerusalem but Paul created Christianity.

a. Pathogenic viruses
b. Pathogenic bacteria
c. Pathogenic protozoa
Boiling the water gets rid of all of them. However it also depends where the stream is located. Pathogens don't come out of nowhere. If the stream is far in the country, with no cities or industrial activity upstream from you and if it's not a place with other campers or hikers around, it's usually safe to drink.

Rather than broken, it's being abused. It SHOULD be there to encourage inventors to share what they create and to let others build on their creations. Probably he was inspired by artificial selection, which was used by pigeon breeders to target specific characteristics in racing pigeons. His studies and research confirmed these initial ideas.

Do you think that the term 'future-proof' is utterly stupid in terms of technology?
Only very simple items can make that claim. A ball, or a fork and knife for instance. You can't go much wrong there. Even with people trying to improve on them, the original basic idea hasn't changed in centuries.

It's conceivable that we will one day have machines to do everything for us, nobody will need to work at all. There will even be robots to repair other robots. There will be robots to produce food for everyone, robots to build houses, etc. There will be no need to earn anything, since the robots produce more than enough for everyone. No money, no trade. Then it will be up to each individual to...

Is the U.S too BIG to fail?
Countries don't fail. They'll continue to exist, though perhaps in a different form. But no, it's not too big. Frankly, it's not as relevant to most of the world as it used to be, except in military projects. All our stuff is made in China anyway. Now if China fell and stopped producing stuff, prices would go way up.

Why are only young, beautiful girls allowed to be victims in horror movies? Why can't average looking girls get hacked up?
It's a psychological response - people tend to feel more sorry for young, beautiful, innocent and/or female. That way you feel sorry for them when they're hacked into tiny bits. On the other hand, the evil characters can also get hacked up but you're not supposed to feel bad about it so they choose older, less attractive men for that role.

Answer to:
Why can primitive cultures handle public nudity but supposedly enlightened ones can't?
Long story. I think religion - particularly the Jewish religion - had a lot to do with it. There's all sorts of passages about how it's shameful to let people see your stuff, starting with the first passages with Adam and Eve, and reinforced throughout the Bible. From this we get to Christianity and Islam, which went even further. Most other cultures had no problems with nudity until they were...

To me, it's not music at all. It's poetry set to a rhythm - and not particularly good poetry either. There are lots of talented singers and poets/lyricists out there. To me it's a way for people who can't sing or produce music to get on stage/radio/tv anyway.

Probably. When you are given something without making a choice and then dump it to choose another option, it shows that you put some thought into it, compared them and ultimately selected something that you think is better, whereas if you just go with what you're given - which is what many people do - that's the easy way out and requires no thought. Pot is less harmful than either tobacco or alcohol.
However, the reason that it's illegal has nothing to do with that. The reason is that it's relatively easy to grow at home, so it's almost impossible for governments to tax. If they found a way to tax it, you can bet your donkey that they'd make it legal overnight and then tax the hell out of it to "discourage its use".

I think that Android-based phones are the best choice out there right now, mostly because they DO offer a choice. Why would burning a piece of cloth be punished more severely than, say, beating someone up or raping someone? No matter what it represents, it's still just a piece of cloth with a symbolic meaning. Oh she has talent. Keep in mind that musical talent is not related to one's image or personality. Madonna has lots of talent and at times in her career, her image was way over the top. They may. Atheists do not believe in deities, but reincarnation does not require a god. So, technically, an atheist can believe in reincarnation, in the horoscope, etc.

Is there a different between speaking honestly and speaking the truth?
Yes. Truth is a statement of fact. Honesty has more to do with what you THINK is the truth, and your intention. You can say something that you honestly think is the truth but isn't. And you could say the truth but do so in such a way that you mislead someone (eg by not saying the whole truth), so you wouldn't be honest.

Are you ruled by your intellect, reasoning? Or are you ruled through a guidance beyond that ( intuition, God, Christ, spirit)?
Intellect and reasoning. A quick glance through the Bible or most other religious scriptures shows that they leave a lot to be desired, but due to the fact that they are "sacred", they won't be changed. At least my intellect, which has similar flaws to those of the people who wrote the Bible, can and does change for the better.

That phrase should never have been placed there to begin with. The original motto was much more apt - "out of many, one". The new one isn't even true - few people truly do trust in god and I'm including believers. Barring a few crazies, when they get sick it's the doctor they seek, not a preacher.

That depends on whether there's any reason for you to be included in their conversation. If, say, you're in a group of 3 and two of them start talking a different language that's rude. On the other hand if you're on a bus and simply enjoy eavesdropping on what other people are saying, that's different.

They won't replace them completely for a long time, but as time goes by, more and more new books will be released as ebooks, and then eventually ONLY as ebooks. Instead of carrying around heavy books in their bags, schoolkids will have one reader containing all of their books for their entire academic years.

Answer to:
Is there a real sense of time, or did humans just invent it for convenience?
Our sense of time is a result of the earth's spin (the day), the moon's phases (the month) and the orbit of the earth (the year). We have necessarily had to adapt to these phenomena because they influence our lives. For the sake of convenience, we have created other, smaller units for measuring time (and a few larger ones).

Words sometimes hurt or damage more than beating, so why some words are not against the law?
Some are. Others have already given the examples of yelling "fire" in a crowded theatre, or else libel laws.
However, people have different reactions to different words. Where one woman appreciates a compliment, another woman considers the same words to be harassing. If you say "Jesus loves you" to a Christian, it will be interpreted in a very different way than if you say it to a Jew. Since...

The best Bibically documented doctrine of the Christian faith is the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ. Why do J/Ws teach Jesus is dead?
Not all Christians agree, and this is something that has been the case since the earliest times. Even at the dawn of Christianity there were some who did not consider Jesus to have been a god. Back in those days of course, they were simply branded as heretics, hunted down and exterminated.

How many people were killed by terrorists on American soil last year? How much did we spend to combat this threat last year?
I occasionally remarked that the terrorists no longer need to enter the US to kill Americans - the US is doing them the favour of sending victims to them. More Americans have been killed to overthrow Saddam Hussein (who had nothing to do with the terrorism anyway) than in the 11 Sept attack - not to mention Iraqis, Afghans and various allies.

How old is the actress who portrays Hermione Granger in "Harry Potter" that puberty has not yet set in?
Make up, costume and other tricks of the trade can make a person appear younger or older. The actress is Emma Watson. She is 21 and in the final episode of HP she's supposed to be about 17. Actually that's not too surprising. In the film Billy Elliott, an 18 year old played the part of Billy's 12 year old best friend.

Does all countries have colleges?
Yes, they do. Contrary to wiseacre's answer, even the most repressive Islamic states do. Even they require doctors or lawyers or architects. In some, college is out of bounds for females. Of course, where law is concerned, they teach the law of that country (as all countries do) which in their case is likely to be based on Sharia law.

It allows the believer to surrender their own sense of good and evil into the hands of someone else, allowing them to commit acts of terrorism, harass minorities and other similar acts of evil while still feeling that they're doing the right thing "because god said so". The very concept of an "age of consent" is flawed because it assumes that everybody's maturity happens at the same age. Considering the water cycle, what are the odds that unhealthy levels of radioactive isotopes end up in our drinking water, ground water?
Slim, and unrelated to the water cycle. The radioactive isotopes are almost always heavy metals, which do not evaporate easily, so they won't end up in the rain. However if there's a nuclear disaster, the explosion can spread radioactive isotopes into the atmosphere, where they can spread over a considerable distance. They will then fall as rain, just once, and then remain in the soil or water...

How difficult is it to convert to Catholicism?
Is wanting to honor my grandmother and her religious traditions a good reason to convert?
No, and the priest in question - if he's halfway decent - will refuse you if that's the only reason you want to convert.
As for difficulty, the biggest hurdle is to make your brain believe the things you'll be required to believe. Once you're past that bit, the rest should be relatively easy.

Has music become more or less expensive over the past couple of decades?
If you take illegal downloading into account, it's slightly cheaper than when we made illegal copies from LP to cassette, because you don't have to buy the cassette.
Music is cheaper to produce for small groups and individuals because computers allow them to do things that could only be done by professional studios in the past. It's also easier for small groups to produce their own CDs in...

You don't. Also, in any serious surgery, you can't just walk in and order a sex change to go. There's preparations to be done. Oh and it's expensive. You'll probably be advised to start off just wearing the clothes and living the life of the opposite gender for a while.

I'm not sure. If they have too many I'd assume they're compulsive hoarders rather than perverts. After all you could be a pervert and not own any films, especially since the internet has more than enough to satisfy anyone.

Hermione, but I might be biased because I think Emma Watson is cute.

Libs: Just what was it that led you to eschew using your own motivation & industry, and instead seek "entitlements"?
Liberals understand that sometimes motivation is insufficient, and a person could be struck by an illness, or his hometown hit by high unemployment, such that this person requires a helping hand in order for this motivation to get a handhold.
Answer to:
Do people understand that the present suffering and the pains is the result of not having enough faith in thier religion?
Nope. They understand that today's suffering and pain is minimal compared to the suffering and pain of the past, and that this is largely thanks to science, and that the only thing religion did to help is to stop burning the scientists at the stake.

Jesus was actually born some time in the Autumn months 2017 years ago. T or F?
Jesus was born in Mexico some 30 odd years ago.
Seriously though...
Jesus was actually born: probably
Some time in autumn: or spring if there were sheep grazing.
2017 years ago: no way to tell. If he was born during Herod's reign, that's about right. However if he was born just after the Roman census, that happened about 10 years after Herod's death.

Many strongly held scientific beliefs have proved to be wrong.Does that mean that all scientific beliefs are wrong & are not based on reason?
No. It means that science has ways of testing its own theories and is willing to discard disproved theories. Religion, on the other hand, resists any challenge to its teachings even when it's been utterly disproved.

It may be "just a rumour" to try to convince people to buy their phones, but I very much doubt that they would ever carry out their threat, since the only thing that would happen is that many would just switch to another provider, and they'd lose money.

Did I hear Pelosi say that unenployment crates employmen? Say that's not true!
Unemployment only favours the employer. By making jobs scarce, employers are able to reduce remuneration and demand unreasonable work from employees who can't afford to leave their job. Unemployment creates a situation where people work for peanuts.
SOME unemployment is acceptable, since it creates a job-seekers market from which employers can employ people. Too much unemployment can ravage...

I don't think it was Constantine really. Incidentally, as an atheist, I don't hate Christmas, but then again I never felt it to be a particularly religious event - even when I was a Christian. Of course when someone insists that "Jesus is the reason for the season" I sometimes point out their error.

I think it's a very silly idea. In some cultures, they consider it better to have a boy than a girl. However there are things that we could not understand at the time - for instance, we've known about lightning since forever, but in order to understand it we first had to learn about electricity, static charge buildup, etc. In order for us to get past lightning so that we could concentrate on the things that we...

Yes. Technically, everyone is a shade of brown. This ranges from super-dark brown such as you can find in the Sudan and other regions, to very pale brown in Nordic regions.
I'm not counting the "lobster pink" that is caused by a pale person staying in the sun too long, since that is a temporary condition.

While sailing, between countries. The absence of light pollution at night blew my mind. I couldn't believe that all those stars had been there all along.
Incidentally, those are called contrails. Chem trails are a conspiracy theory whereby the government uses high-altitude jets as "crop dusters" to spray chemicals and control our minds, or something.

How come it is illegal to copy a DVD movie, but its legal to copy a Music CD?
You cannot copy and distribute either of them. It's totally legal to "rip" a CD that you own so that you can play it on an MP3 player, for instance.
DVDs however contain a copy-protection mechanism, and according to the US' DMCA law, it's illegal to get around that, even if it's the easiest thing in the world since it wasn't worth crap.

can children be child molesters
According to law, anybody who has sex with a minor is guilty of statutory rape, even if it is consensual. It's a bit more vague when both parties are minors, and both are consensual, but I believe some magistrates have ruled that it's still molestation. In some jurisdictions however, the parties must be a number of years apart for it to count as abuse (if consensual).

No.
Every political system hopes to, or at least promises to, create a kind of heaven on earth. The capitalist version of this is called "The American Dream". Oh, and sometimes it inspires the fervour of religion too - recently it even convinced a substantial portion of America to fear health care. That takes a very powerful control over the minds of the people.

There are no children of that age, only fetuses. I believe that fetal surgery is only done in the later stages of pregnancy, by which point abortions are rare and in some places, illegal. As to the reason, it's the same reason why sometimes a woman wants to have a baby and sometimes she doesn't.

Not yet. Although womb transplants have been carried out successfully, so far they've only been transplanted from woman to woman. Eventually though, I expect a man to receive a womb transplant, at which point he can become pregnant. Because the purpose of the news agency is to report news. Especially if it contains important pieces of information, whether they are embarrassing or not.

Why do certain people say things like "Real women have curves" and "Real women have meat on their bones"? Skinny women are real, too!
I think it's an attempt to counteract the message being given out by the fashion industry that "beautiful=skeletal".
