Is this normal? Yep, it's just that you're particularly good at playing by ear. After you learn to read music, if you have difficulty getting a rhythm or want to know how it sounds, ask someone to play it for you and you should be able to imitate it easily. Pianists... if you have moving triplets in the right hand and moving eighth notes in the left, how would you go about practicing in order to syncronize them? Exactly what i am so busy said, except it's much easier to get triplets and quarter notes down first, then just divide the quarter notes in half while your right hand plays triplets. To start, get an idea of the division of a beat in thirds and halves (then quarters).

Which would be a better instrument to play: piccolo or flute? Definitely flute. The piccolo requires so much more air and breathing control that if you're a beginner, it's harder to last long before you start getting dizzy. Even on the flute, make sure to stop and rest if you get dizzy. You can switch to piccolo later, or if you're in a band you can play your flute while the piccolo has rests.
