With a drop D bass string *instead of E*, if you accidentally hit one of the lower strings while soloing, it is less likely to interfere with the harmonics of the playing string, and might even help somewhat, and that somewhat can be used to advantage with skill.

There are capo's you can get to help with this, and there are electronically enhanced guitars that you can tune normally and have the sound electronically changed to the tuning you want. Freaky good stuff, but they'rein the thousand dollar range. Capo's are only tens of dollars......

Well, a very tuff ? y'know. HAve you played any other instruments, like violin or guitar? How much do you want to spend? You can start with 4 and work up, or start with 6 and work down. Most BIG TIME bass players also play guitar. And they tune their bass HOWEVER the flock they want....

Ooops, this was supposed to be a comment for Greg's answer. Agree, you may have too much "action" on that string for the way you play. You may need to raise that string or replace it with a different gauge to get the action you deserve for your style.

A realistic goal would be 5 pound per MONTH. You could probably do that on diet alone. Exercise will make you more fit, but muscle weighs more than fat, about twice as much, but it's more dense, and takes up less space. So you look more fit, but weigh more (or the same).
