Being a parent has been the most fun thing I've ever experienced. Is the same true for those of you who are parents?
Yes. It's also the hardest thing.
I adore my kids, and I enjoy the time I spend with them. I'm pleased by how much their mere existence affects my day-to-day existence, and I generally like who I am while I'm with them, which is also nice.
But the good times we share are so good, and watching them grow and develop is so joyous, that it's easy to answer Yes to your question.

Definitely! Folks get emailed when their questions get answered, so that might bring them back.

Answer to:
You time travel to Munich, 1930. In a bar, a man talks loudly to his friends. It's Hitler. A 45 is in your pocket. Could you kill him?
It's tricky. I would certainly consider it, but as Moongrim references, then my entire existence is put into question. If I killed Hitler in 1930, then what motivated my going back to the past in 2010 to do so? Do I get stuck in 1930, or vanish from existence?
If I vanish from existence, that has cascading effects. What happened to my parents' kid? What happens to my kids?
And of course...

Answer to:
Why do black people have white finger tips?
Evolutionarily, no one needs especially dark skin on fingertips or soles of the feet.
Note that with Caucasians, often the palm of the hand, fingertips, and soles are a lighter shade than the rest of the skin. The body makes less pigment in people of all races at those areas, since pigmentation's main function is to block harmful rays from the sun.
By "saving" pigmentation for the areas...

Can a VIN # tell date of production ? Not just year but when was made?
The tenth character in the VIN will tell you the year it was made. If it’s “8,” then the car is a 2008. If it’s “0,” then it's a 2010.
VINs don't get more specific.
Sites like carfax.com can tell you a bit more from the VIN.

How effective is hostility when you want to communicate? Does it enhance/extend communication or abort it before it begins?
I'm definitely of the school of thought that hostility is totally unproductive for constructive communication.
When you communicate with anger, you get your message across, but also present yourself as completely unable to hear the other viewpoint(s).

Parent: which threat against the well-being of today's teenage population is of most concern to you? Why?
Obviously, I want nothing bad for my kids. But as bad as some of these things are, my primary concern is lifelong/permanent damage to them or their psyches, which substance abuse can lead to more than anything else on this list.

Find folks who interest you on the site — they post interesting questions, or insightful answers. Don't miss the forums as another key place to find people.

Answer to:
What do you think of gossip shows such as 'The Insider', 'Extra', 'TMZ', etc.?
I don't watch any of them, but I will admit to subscribing to TMZ's RSS feed. Now that they've repeatedly broken big, interesting stories (Mel Gibson's DUI, Michael Jackson's death, Michael Richard's rant), TMZ strikes me as a legitimate news feed.
There's a little too much garbage to sort through there, but my feed reader helps make quick work of that.

I'm obviously biased. I like the new one more.
For one, you could have made this question a poll on the new site, which wasn't even an option on the old site. That would allow us to see at a glance the number of people who preferred one or the other.
Second, the briefer questions overall seem to help people stay focused. Don't forget that you have the much, much larger "description" field...

The Office: American or British version?
It's a very close race. But shows excel in unique and extreme ways. Ricky Gervais is one of the funniest people on the planet.
That said, The US Office has way more hours of comedy. While the UK version may have a better batting average, the US version has hit more home runs.

Are you disappointed with Lost's final season so far?
To me, it feels like the writers are really spinning their wheels unnecessarily. They are very, very hesitant to reveal answers, which can only mean two things to me:
1. They're concerned that the audience won't like them, so they're saving them till the final episode to keep viewership up without losing anyone.
2. They have nothing to add to the story other than answers, so the next dozen...

What do you think about schools in New Orleans and Indiana delaying and closing school Monday because of the Super Bowl?
Great question.
I'm of two minds here. One is that it's harmless overall: The kids will miss an hour or two of school, but will get to go in more refreshed (if they stay up till the end of the game) than if they'd had to be there on time. We're going to get a big snowstorm where I live; that could cause school delays too, though obviously for a more tangible reason. Still, I don't think a 1...

Does LASIK surgery last forever?
I can personally attest that the effects aren't permanent, but they are long-lasting. My LASIK procedure was back in March 2003. In late 2009, I learned that one eye had slipped from 20/20 to 20/25, and one eye had slipped from 20/15 to 20/20. Those are very slight changes, and not worth getting glasses for.

I swear by my tax guy. Of course, I have kids and work in a different state from my employer and each year it seems like there's some new complexity.

How does Answerbag's new system for points and levels work?
In late December 2009, Answerbag underwent a massive redesign. Part of that change directly impacted how members rate questions and answers. Tweaking how questions and answers were rated, of course, was...

After the question text, there are sometimes links like: "Related: answerbag, questioning"? How do those "related tags" work?
The "related tags" are algorithmically-driven. They're meant to help us group related questions by tag, in addition to category.
We're aiming to trim down the category tree early in 2010. So instead of many many categories, we'll have far fewer, and turn the extras into additional tags.
Example: "Susan Boyle," we think, doesn't need her own AB category. But if she were in (for example) a...

Yesterday afternoon, we launched the ability to "Report" a question for being in the wrong category. After you do so, you're prompted to tell us where you think the question belongs.
This question looks like it's in the right category to me (Answerbag Moderation Guide), but that it has bad Related tags (which I intend to fix shortly). Is that what you see (or saw), too?
