Is it true that when you die your brain is still active, if so does that mean you sense everything around you?
That depends a great deal upon how you die. Many people go into a coma and then die, for instance, and there is virtually no brain activity before or after the death. When the heart stops, the blood supply to the brain stops, leading quickly to unconsciousness, so in cases of heart disease and heart attack, the brain may shut down first due to lack of blood supply. The only case where your...

If you know anyone who is getting a new cellphone, ask them if you can have the old one. It's free and it is virtually the same as a life-line. Without paying for a phone plan, any old cellphone will STILL be able to call 9-1-1. And you get a direct connection to 9-1-1 instead of having to go through a private company first. I keep an old cellphone plugged into the charger in my...

Imagine we represent the model by a digit in the range of 0-9. There are 2 of the first component and 1 of the second, so there are 3 digits: xxx. You look at rainfall going back as many years as you have data, and look at the top 10% years in terms of rainfall. Let's say they range evenly from 20 to 40 inches. Take the mean of these, that give you 30 inches. Since it's the top 10%, the projected 1 in 10 year rainfall is 30 inches. The sensor on most such devices is nothing more than a simple spring switch. Two pieces of metal touch; when the printer is closed, a wedge of plastic is forced between them to interrupt the circuit. Yes, that's normal. And it's normal for there to be some biting and scratching or even torn ears as part of the coercion, followed by screaming; reportedly cats have thorny penises. Nonetheless, way too many kittens are born every year, and most of them are killed or die of starvation, so I hope you have a good reason for wanting to breed your cat.

Which is better cut steak, ribeye or filet mignon?
I know Filet is the most expensive, but I find it rather uninteresting, it's too delicate, not quite mushy but in that direction. I'd prefer a good NY strip steak or aged Porterhouse any day over filet or ribeye.

I am in the minority, I know, but I actually pay attention to the iodine I get in my diet. I like dulse seaweed in a salad, which is one of the best natural sources of iodine. I use both iodized salt (for convenience) and non-iodized natural sea salt (for flavor) depending on the situation but I always make sure that I get enough iodine. No goiter on this AB'er!

Why should I not eat lobsters? Being vegetarian I am not supposed to eat fish only! Why not crabs and lobsters?
Eat whatever you want, don't pay attention to hypocrites who tell you not to eat this or that. A lobster is an arthropod, as are head lice and cockroaches. So if someone says you're cruel to eat one, they're a hypocrite if they ever wash their hair, thus killing a very similar life form.

There are a LOT of people born in October. I heard that a big part of the reason is that many people got a little too wild in their new year's celebrations, and got pregnant as a result. First pregnancies are often a gestation of 9 months plus 1 to 2 weeks which puts them into October assuming conception on December 31.

replace "a substance" with any specific substance and it becomes obvious what the problem is. For instance,

It won't work. While it could work for a short period of time, as soon as the cable is frayed, the entire thing would have to be replaced. Why do people spank their dogs if they "misbehave"? And does spanking the animal ever really work?
Good trainers use "spanking" to get a dog's attention when necessary rather than to hurt the dog. A thin roll of newspaper makes a loud whack but causes no real pain. Loud aggressive sounds are the natural thing to train dogs, but we are ill equipped to make such sound (barking, growling) on our own, but still getting the dog to obey a stern voice is the objective.

Do you believe that a person will voluntarily change for the better? Do you believe that a person will decide to do right without a perceived or real external stimulus (e.g., threat of harm, reward, or divine intervention)? Why or why not?
Yes, for instance millions of people voluntarily enroll in classes every year, and education is certainly one of the best ways to change for the better. Even without anyone lecturing them, most people realize that though they COULD get drunk every night for instance, that their health and happiness would suffer, and they'd be unable to achieve their goals in the long run.

Any recommendations you would give a first time drinker?
Consider your lifetime objectives in the decision to drink. For instance, find a loud stupid person with a huge pot belly, and chances are he's a serious beer drinker. If you want to drink, be the kind of drinker that you would want to know, not the kind you'd want to stay away from.

Vegetables are alive. Therefore, surely being a vegetarian and killing all those poor innocent carrots is just as bad as being a meat eater! What do you think?
Vegetarian goody goodies tend to be hypocritical idiots. In an organic garden you can expect dozens of insects and snails on a head of lettuce. Whether they kill the bugs or move them away from the lettuce, they are killing them even if by depriving them of their food. If you cooked a lobster for dinner you consciously took the life of one arthropod. The vegetarian took the lives of dozens...

We didn't have Windows, only DOS. You had to type to get things to happen; type to get a directory listing (dir /s) type to start up a spreadsheet program (r visicalc) type to delete a file (del *.*). It was slower but we still got real work done.

Why do people boil lobsters alive? Does the suffering of them make it taste better?
Lobsters start to deteriorate almost immediately upon death so it is essential that they are alive until the last moment. Boiling is a fast, effective, non-meat-drying and humane way to kill them. Don't think for a moment that a chicken in a package died a more humane death. And vegetarians cause as many or even more deaths of creatures; the snails and bugs that were crawling around in...

Auction dates with well known local singles. Italy. Ballet and most "culture" and music words come from Italian. Ballare means "to dance" and Ballerina means literally "a small woman who dances." Culture is so much a part of life in Italy, it makes sense that when we talk of ballet, symphony, violins, pianos, etc... we are speaking Italian.

Do stores ever have an improperly parked vehicle towed away, or do they ignore it to avoid upsetting that customer?
Both, depending on the situation. In neighborhoods where parking is in high demand, stores will often have "parking lot security" which observes where people go as they exit their cars. If you park at the supermarket and walk immediately across the street to a different store, your care is towed, which is fair since you weren't a customer to begin with.

First put Peta nonsense out of your head. They have their heads up their butts. Looking rationally at the issue though, there is a good reason not to eat them, which is the same reason we don't eat eagles or owls; they are carnivores and too high up the food chain. Pesticides and other toxins accumulate more and more in an animal's body as they are higher and higher on the food...

I feel the most concerning aspect is that the upswings and downswings do not seem to match what is going on in your life. If you're out to have a good time with good friends but feel dread and sadness, for instance, that should clue you that something is wrong. If however, you are feeling up during good times and down when you're hung over or your dog dies, that is perfectly normal....

Why does fried food turn golden brown
the heat causes the chemical breakdown of the batter/breading, which causes some molecules to turn to smoke and rise out of the oil or get absorbed into the oil. What makes you think you can't put sawdust into your garden? As long as it's pure natural wood sawdust, there's no problem in that. But I would NOT add rabbit droppings or any other droppings directly to the garden. They should be composted first; added to your compost pile and turned, to break down bacteria. Raw waste added to gardens is the cause of many types of food-borne...

Why is crowd behavior so different from individual behavior?
Because "me" is different from "you." In most group situations, one can try to go his/her own way, or "go with the flow" Going with the flow avoids resistance and having to fight against the flow (or opinion) of the rest of the group, but gives up the personal decision-making. If the entire group is moving to the East, for instance, and you follow the group, you...

Yes, but only if the universities promised that they would be able to find work in their field upon graduating. And the Universities must also be able to sue the students when they don't do their homework, when they cheat, when they skip class, and so forth. It works both ways.

Yes, the records must be open to parents because sometimes records secrecy is a ruse to hide child abuse by school administrators. There have been cases where records were altered or intentionally not kept to obscure illegal activities. Here are some links about actual cases:

How about a cross between "Star Trek" and "The Love Boat" about the starship Galactic Princess? Some episodes would be typical Trek with the ship facing disaster from some space anamoly, but most would be about the romantic goings on between passengers.
That was part of the formula of the original series, which is how Star Trek became popular to both male and female audiences. Women were said to watch wondering whom or what kind of creature Kirk would be romancing next. "Kiss the girls and punch the guys" Some people say the newer Star Trek series were less successful because they forgot this formula.

If your friend was sleeping on the floor and you had to kick him as hard as you could in the ribs to save his life, but when he woke up you couldn't tell him why. What would your excuse be?
That's a weird question, so here's a weird answer. I was going to take a funny picture of him while he was sleeping. I put a hard boiled egg in his mouth and got the camera ready but he inhaled it into his throat and started to choke. When I kicked him in the chest the egg flew across the floor and he woke up and what was I gonna say? I just said Oops, sorry man, I tripped.

The usual treatment is to inject saline water under the skin which makes the cat puffy and sloshy and flushes out the kidneys but given how you describe the situation and that you can't afford a vet you may be saying goodbye to your feline friend. Just try to keep it comfortable with water and food in reach, though he will probably not touch them.

I've lived in places where it got down to 20 or 30 below zero. An engine block heater is wise when it's going to get down to 10 degrees F or colder. When it drops to zero, roughly half the cars on the street (without heaters) have trouble starting. At 10 below, only a quarter of them will start.

Etiquette depends a lot upon context. When "dining with the queen" the polite guest does as the queen does, and the queen uses a knife and fork.
But in most contexts it's find to use your hands. Just don't wipe the jelly from your fingers onto your pants, that's never polite.

I would like my parents name removed from my Birth Certificate. They never had anything to do with me and I would like it to be removed.. Is this possible?
Hi, that's rather sad, but I understand your concern and sympathize. The easiest thing to do is to apply for a passport and use it whenever you might otherwise be asked to produce a birth certificate. You're then able to burn your birth certificate if you like, you're not required to keep it. There is a copy of your birth certficate and/or birth records on file at your local...

Star Trek did some good episodes on that theme, where the self proclaimed gods of various planets were vain, vengeful and sadistic lechers.
See the episode: Who Mourns for Adonnis? from the original series. It's available in its entirety on Youtube:

Last week my battery was dead so I bought a new one it worked fine for a few days then my engine sounded like it didnt want to turn over. Now it only clicks one time, I tried to jump it with no luck wha could it be.
You have a short circuit that is draining your battery, or some accessory that is still on after the car is turned off. If you disconnect the positive cable to your battery you can test this with a multimeter, but I'll bet you that's it. Finding the culprit is the harder part. Did you have any accessories added recently? A new radio or GPS system perhaps?

How often can you give blood? Do you have to wait a certain amount of time in between donations? Do they accept blood if you drink a lot of alcohol?
If you regularly drink a lot, you can cause enough damage to your liver to raise the liver enzymes AST and ALT. If you have elevated liver enzymes twice in a row when you go to donate, they will destroy your blood and forbid you to donate again, because the symptoms are similar to hepatitis.
