My daughter has a smelly scalp. Her hair is washed every other day. And I have even tried tea tree oil. The hair smells bad (mostly top of head area). I asked the doctor if it was something in her diet (yeast,etc), but no answers. It smells dirty. I've had this problem for the past year... it is so frustrating! I've tried Selsun, H&S and Giovanna Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner with no luck. However, in the past few days I've been trying Tersaseptic (http://www.stiefel.ca/tersaseptic.php?lang=1) and it seems to be working well!!! I highly recommend trying it. Good luck with this.
