Why are board games so unrealistic?
I've seen quite a few board games. Most seem to attempt to be a diversion or entertainment. A few seriously attempt to recreate a historic event or real life situation. Yes.
If they have children and aren't prepared for the responsibilities, or they are pressured to have children when they don't want to, they are better off not having children. I believe that the children that are born to these people have a higher rate of crime and disrespect towards other people than the population at large, so the children born into this situation would tend to verify this.

Why are text books at the college level so expensive to buy and worth nearly nothing when students sell them back?
I believe that it is a scam. The publishers "update" a bit here and a bit there and call it a new edition. They also may change the problems. the end result is the students almost have to buy the new edition, because the older used books don't have problems and text in use in the new edition.
The end result is that for the college crowd, used text books don't have much value.

I've lived in two houses that had wells. The first one had no problems. The second usually had water, but the quality wasn't always the best. You had to sanitize the well occasionally.
Growing up, I was in Boy Scouts and when we were camping well water was all we usually had. On one camping trip though we didn't have that. Also not too far from where I grew up, there was a forest...

Is it OK to briefly leave a child alone in a parked car?
No.
You are responsible for your child's well being. Leaving your child alone, even in a car, leaves an opportunity for something unanticipated to happen that could result in injury or death to your child which had you had your child with you could have been avoided.
Enough can happen even when your child is with you. You can't protect them against everything, but at least if they are with...

Actually, unless you already have a job, no one knows specifically what you'll need to know. No one can say for certain what opportunities will exist when you graduate. All the colleges can do is give you the opportunity to learn...

Why do some answers on Answerbag appear in a different font?
I hadn't seen this.
I looked at the oldest question on AB I could find, http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/1, and noticed a few of the answers appear to be in courier font.
I would guess that this might be accomplished by adding html coding to your answer.
Actually, it is more readable if a uniform font is used, with good paragraph organization, sentence construction and grammar.

I never thought of doing this, but your premise is that this is after a few dates.
After a few dates, there must be enough interest on each side to get to know each other. So I suppose looking in the medicine cabinet might be reasonable. These questions don't really bother me because, for the most part I don't pay any attention to them. Many, or maybe even most, of the religious questions seem to be pursuing an agenda, so to me are not actually asking a question, but rather seeking to pronounce a verdict, or an opinion.

In some states, schools are required to permit religious answers to exam questions (i.e. how old is the Earth) as per "freedom of religion" legislation. How will this affect the American education system?
It is absurd!
For one thing, it is unworkable, i.e. undoable. From a practical standpoint there are hundreds if not thousands of religions so how is a school teacher able to be cognizant about all of them in order to adhere to this law?
Also, every student would have to declare what religion they were in order for the teacher to know what religious beliefs to test the student to.

Answer to:
Is Thanksgiving a religious holiday?
Thanksgiving's basis is to give thanks for what we have. Some may attribute that to God, others to hard work, yet others to dumb luck. I believe that its origin is not religious based, but thankful for having survived another year. Accordingly, I believe it is lesser a religious holiday than a lets celebrate that we're still here holiday.

Answer to:
Will you watch the 2009 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade?
I doubt it. If I'm changing channels when it's on, I may stop and watch a couple minutes.
This is something my family did all the time I was growing up. I've never retained the interest in it.
I also marched in parades in a Marching band in HS and College (although this isn't really noteworthy).
Answer to:
Who is going to work (and get paid for it) on Thanksgiving?
Not this year.
For probably the last 25 +/- years, where I work has officially recognized the Friday after Thanksgiving Thursday as a work Holiday. I think I remember working a storm on Thanksgiving once, and definitely I worked at least 5 Fridays +/-.
For storm duty I would be paid.

Can our HOA put a line item in our 2010 budget to make up for home owners/builders they feel will be uncollectible assessments in 2010? The line item is $17517.54 in uncollectible assessments that will be paid by the home owners that pay their dues.
I'm not a lawyer so I may not have the correct answer here: Some HOA are formed after a subdivision was started, or were not formed "correctly" and are not on the property title. As a result, when you buy into that subdivision, you are not legally obligated to joining the HOA and paying dues.
Bottom line, if the HOA is on your property title, they can force you to pay, if...

My freind and i played the first civilization online years ago. How can i do this today? i have a version of the original (1.6.0), but it doesn't have the option. i know there was an option, but it might have been a slightly different version. HELP?
I'd suggest moving to Civilization IV. I never played Civilization I or III. I had Civilization II (loved it even better than IV) but as far as I know, the only version that will run on Vista is IV.
I had an older version of IV from when it first came out and patch 1.61 works to update IV to enable it to run on Vista. Here is a download site http://www.civiv.com/downloads.htm....

This sounds like a scam.
Their books should have been audited in either late 2008 or very early 2009. As I think about this more, I'd expect that a dealer should be balancing their books monthly. So it is was past the time when an error should have been discovered.
Regardless, if they made a mistake, I take it that they are claiming a mistake was made, if they signed off of the...

They all pass each other in the intersection.
Assuming a square intersection, if all four cars enter the intersection at the same time, and that the intersection is sufficiently wide, all four cars will pass behind the car entering on the perpendicular road.
Assuming a round-a-bout, it is obvious that they miss each other.

Car tires contain carbon in the rubber which is an electrical conductor. However, the carbon is in a small amount, so car tires are not a good conductor of electricity.
The metal shell of the car is somewhat of a protector because it acts as a Faraday cage around the occupants. That is, the car body tries to maintain an equipotential plane around the occupants, which reduces (not...

No, and I'd advise against trying. Your tires probably aren't rated for that speed and above a speed much lower than 180 any little bump in the road can flip your car. (I saw a TV program about the German autobahn, and they showed what slight defects in the road can do to overly fast cars.)

It is frustrating to see some real jerks (cleaned up adjective) showing their true colors.

Although I'm not a Professor (sometimes at work one of my co-workers calls me Professor), I get so deep into my problems I forget about other things.
Likewise, I can imagine that a Professor may get so wrapped up in a project that other things may be forgotten, hence the appearance of being absent minded may be present. Or is this the definition of absent minded?

Why do some people feel uncomfortable going to all art exhibits?
My guess would be that they're thinking that they are supposed to get all sorts of deep spiritual stuff from the art.
My thought is that like good food and good music, art should have depth to it. That is something that is easily seen, and the more you look at it, the more is revealed. Although, I'll admit, I'm not an art expert, so most of the time, I don't see a lot...

I think sometimes you may get feedback on an old question or answer. So old that it doesn't show up on your feedback list. You only get 5 pages of feedback. Or for some reason the feedback is lost for a while and then found when it is too old to show up.
Regardless, mark all as read should reset the comments indicator.

I don't know what the feeling is about assisted suicide in the UK, but if it's like the US, there is a lot of controversy. A lot of people in the US are opposed to it period.
I think that as long as the person is terminally ill and would die a painful or prolonged death, if the person would rather get it over with, why not.

What should i do if i had brake failure and to make my car to stop?
Take your foot off the gas and use the emergency brake.
40 years ago, I had a car that fortunately had a generator, not an alternator. I drove home 20 miles with a dead battery, at night, with the parking lights on, using the emergency brake because I had to keep one foot on the gas and one on the clutch to keep the engine running. This is why to this day I prefer a hand brake style...

Of course there is a challenge. It's a different challenge though. This challenge, if you decide to take it, is to craft a question that others are also interested in the answers that are provided. That is the basis for others rating the question. The asker is presumed to always have an interest in the answers, or they wouldn't be asking the question.

What was the first big amusement park you remember going to as a kid?
Kiddyland in Northlake, IL. was the first. They had an actual steam powered steam engine and a huge roller coaster. They also had a pony ride and one of the ponies started to stand up on two legs once when I was riding it!! I was about 6 years old at the time.
I also remember Riverview in Chicago. They had a roller coaster that left its tracks and rolled around in a tube!

I use the computer.
I might watch the TV. We record and time shift about 98% of the TV we watch. And we skip commercials.
I am definitely more involved when using the computer and I'd say the time amounts to just about a tie, with the computer slightly in the lead.
Unless you count work. I work on a computer about 95% of the time.

I haven't heard this work. I found this recording of Beethoven's Egmont Overture and another of Beethoven's Ninth Sym. If these are any indicator of the quality of Celibidache's work, I'm sure that his Beethoven's Fifth is excellent.

As long as you have an internet email account with a reputable antivirus program I'd think you'd probably be ok.
I think the major issue would be the risk of someone having left a key logger or some other spyware program on the kiosk PC, so I'd suggest restricting your use of an Internet Cafe PC to email and not any other sensitive accounts that you may wish to sign on and use.

I know someone that built a geodesic dome house from a kit about 35 years ago. It was very energy efficient.

Why only 6? I view all my friends as special, and have a small list.

This should be private, ie not visible except to the individual classifying their friends as some people have thin skins and get offended easily. What should this do though? Since there is no real up or down in outer space, why is it that ships in sci-fi movies always meet on the same axis?

What were your hopes and dreams as a child and what happened to you that you were not able to fulfill them?
No on two counts.
I played a musical instrument for many years. I knew I wasn't good enough to really make a career of it though. And I thought I had a shot at my other serious hope.
When I was growing up, for the longest time, I wanted to be professional navy. One big problem though. My eyes were way too bad and I didn't find out about this until real late.

From what little I know of the two, their approaches were different.

Newton, worked with analysis. The apple falling from a tree thing.

What item other than milk, do you look for an expiration date?
I look over everything, especially since I bought a package of peanuts in a gas station that had expired. Usually the date is a sell by and you can skate by a few days after the date. But in this case the date was long past (I didn't check this time) and when I opened the package, there was all this funny, stringy, growy, mold inside.

We are having a problem with static electricity, after walking around the room for awhile if you touch something, you will get shocked! Is this a problem when oxygen is being stored in the house? Could be explode?
I think that you'd also have to have an oxygen leak in order for there to be a problem.
The answers about increasing humidity, contacting your supplier for safe storage instructions and oxygen supporting combustion, but not being explosive itself, are correct.

Answer to:
What is a food that is high in Calcium?
Dairy products are typically major sources of calcium. I liked the link to non-dairy sources of calcium, since I (temporarily I hope) have to restrict my lactose intake. One thing I read about calcium, is that you also need to be sure to get potassium along with calcium, because the potassium helps your body assimilate calcium.

When you buy bananas, do you take the whole bunch, or do you pull of how many you want?
If the whole bunch has the right number of bananas I want, I take the whole bunch. Otherwise I pull off bananas I don't want. Sometimes I see bananas, that look bad or like they'll spoil faster, so I take those of a bunch to leave them behind.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you like 1 to 10 scales?
If the subject of the 1 to 10 scale is appropriate for a 1 to 10 scale, I'd only give it an 8, since 1 to 10 scales are over used.
If the subject shouldn't be measured on a 1 to 10 scale, 0.
