DESIDERATA

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons. They are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome self-discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you right now, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labours and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams; it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.

Friends: All welcome. I consider all Answerbaggers to be my friends. Even as friends, I do not expect you to always agree with me on any given subject. Nor should you expect me to always to agree with you. After all, I am not you and you are not me. We all have our own ideas and opinions, based on our own life experiences and characters. We can all learn from each other. Let's feel free discuss anything. Let's keep it civil, though. Anyway, some people use the friends list simply to track someone's Q & A. Nothing wrong with that. Let's have fun!

The Story of Six Blind Men and an Elephant

Six blind men were asked to determine what an elephant looked like by feeling different parts of the elephant's body. The blind man who feels a leg says the elephant is like a pillar; the one who feels the tail says the elephant is like a rope; the one who feels the trunk says the elephant is like a tree branch; the one who feels the ear says the elephant is like a hand fan; the one who feels the belly says the elephant is like a wall; and the one who feels the tusk says the elephant is like a solid pipe.

A king explains to them:

"All of you are right. The reason every one of you is telling it differently is because each one of you touched the different part of the elephant. So, actually the elephant has all the features you mentioned."

Moral of the story: If you wish to understand what an elephant really is, it helps to speak to all of the men.

Religious views: Religion comes up quite often here on Answerbag so maybe I should give you some background to avoid confusion.

Pro-Religious Tolerance/ Freedom./ Objectivism/ Universalism

Anti-Fundamentalism/ Fanaticism/ Literalism.

Religion is not the enemy. Extremism is the enemy.

"Then there are the fanatical atheists whose intolerance is the same as that of the religious fanatics, and it springs from the same source . . . They are creatures who can't hear the music of the spheres."

- Einstein

"Being a temperate man, it logically follows that I abhor the very idea of prohibition. In my eyes a teetotaller is quite as intemperate as a drunkard, and he is without a drunkard's sense of decency. For whereas most drunkards are ashamed of their intemperance, most teetotallers glory in theirs, make a boast of it, and ram it down the throats (literally, in the form of ginger ale and such chemical abominations) of their guests and other victims. A drunkard is usually content to be drunk himself. He does not demand that the whole world shall be drunk with him. A teetotallers insists—and when possible enforces this insistence—that everybody else shall abstain as well."

- Rafael Sabatini

I am not fanatical about religion but if you need to place me in a box you can consider me a Pantheist with a Christian (Catholic) background. Lately I've been leaning towards Panentheism. I'd rather you just see me as an individual though. I'm not trying to convert anyone and I don't toe any party line. In fact, I am not bothered about what anyone else believes (but I do find it interesting). If something I say upsets you, I suggest you have a cup of tea and go lie down for a while. It's not worth getting worked up about and it probably wasn't aimed at you personally. Try not to take anything I say personally. Please.
