Answer to:
Should there be a law against bogans naming their own children?
The greatest example of Bogans and their kids names, was in Neighbours, where a delightful child called Brie came onto the scene. Now, I happen to like cheese, so I have no objection to having a family of small cheeses - Brie, Camembert, Cheddar, and Stilton. Maybe I would name one Boursin if I wanted to go for something really classy....

What do you think of protesters who call themselves “Born again Christians” who stage protests at the funerals of dead soldiers who served in Iraq, and insult their grieving families. Should this type of free speech be protected?
free speech should be protected - but it is sad that some people do not understand that with rights comes responsibilities. It is right to be able to say what we want (well except on Answerbag, where there are things one is not allowed to say) but we must consider the needs of others. Personally I think it is wrong to insult families particularly at funerals, and I have the freedom to say...

Do you think our Founding Fathers would approve of mentally ill people being able to acquire guns? Why or why not?
It could be argued that your founding fathers were mentally ill people! They didn't like the place they were living in, so they moved to Holland for freedom, didn't like the licentious freedom available there, so moved to a whole new land, ignoring the existing populace and setting up their own restrictive culture based on their belief systems. Sounds crazy to me!

Albert Camus states (in the Myth of Sisyphus) that there is only one philosophical problem, and that is suicide.

What do the colors of the irish flag stand for?
The green represents the little jackets worn by leprechauns, the white represents their pallid complexions, as the sun never shines over there, and the orange represents the colour of their hair.

Gordan brown just called a labour voter "a Bigot". Would you vote for labour now?
Yes - the labour party is made up of more than one man - Gordon Brown is not standing in my constituency, so I could not vote for him anyway. Under our current electoral system, we sadly have to vote for a person, not a party
Answer to:
Does Gordon Brown look scarier when he smiles?

Answer to:
Im 12 nd to stop cutting I drink wit my sis and her frends. My sis is bout 18 nd most of her friends r of legal age.How bad will this do me?
1 - there is an age limit on AB - you say you are 12 - therefore you are too young for AB
2 - there is a very odd change of linguistic style in your question - you start off using bad spelling, in the style of a young person, but you then change and use perfectly correct grammar and punctuation. There are not many 12 year olds who even know what a semi-colon is, let alone when to use one.

Yes - I do not think Britain would be concerned about the colour of their prime minister - after all, noone batted an eyelid when Nick Clegg stated that he was not a man of faith (this would have caused a furore in USA!). However, Britain is not really ready for a Blue Prime Minister, and seems to be a little fed up with the Red one they have at the moment. Mind you, if Kilroy-Silk had got in,...

is communism a bad thing or good thing?
In theory, communism is a great idea - it is sort of like christianity, without the religion - nice ideals where everyone has an equal role to play in society, as we can all work together. But in order for it to work in practice, it requires total commitment from its members. And that is where human nature comes in, and human's desire to compete. I suppose communism could represent a utopia,...

Maybe it just said O because when they looked at you and your daughter, they said "Oh!". Perhaps some other people had A on theirs because when the doctors saw them, they said "Aaaah!" I have no idea what AB might possibly mean, unless of course the person wearing them was a bit aggressive

What grade or age do they graduate in your country in usa we graduate school in 12th grade at age 17 or 18 if they are lucky enough too?
in UK, we do not graduate until we leave university - a graduate is a person who has earned a degree.
However, currently, you can leave school at age 16. That is increasing to a stage where young people will have to remain in some kind of training or education until age 18 - but that does not necessarily mean full time education or training. Students will still be able to leave school at 16 and...

You want to lose 50lb - set aside 25 weeks -and lose it at a rate of 2 pounds per week.
You can go on any number of fad diets - but it is just a simple matter of consuming less calories than you use up.
Each pound of fat is worth about 3500 calories -so to lose 2lb a week, you need to eat 7000 calories less than you use up. That is simple maths.

How come there were so many movies about the Vietnam war but no (or very few) movies about the wars in the Middle East (Gulf War, etc)?
the vietnam war happened a while ago - there are less people around to criticise the inaccuracies.
Also, the middle east wars are more boring - weapons have developed to involve distance fighting - via spy cameras, remote controlled devices etc. So, a movie about operators sitting behind a computer programming the missile paths may not be as interesting.

Or is a successful teacher one who has an excellent with the students? Sometimes those teachers are lovely and friendly, but do not always focus on the syllabus, and therefore students may like the teacher, but do not do...

Can an inventor get rich?
Hmm... not a desperately well worded question. CAN an inventor get rich? Well, of course s/he can, in the same way as anyone can get rich.
I assume that what you intended to ask whether is is likely that an inventor could get rich from the inventions that s/he created. Because of course, it is possible that s/he could get rich from winning the lottery or from working hard as a banker, and...

I have heard that, by 2025, half of American workforce will be comprised of temporary workers.
firstly, can you please quote the source for this information? Was it a legitimate source or is it just scare mongering?
Secondly, in a capitalist society, business is king - so business can decide who to employ and for how long. Employing temporary workers, or workers on short term contracts means that they can hire and fire legitimately, and those employed will work harder in the hope that...

I'm vegan and every time i go home from college i seem to eat nothing but carbs(bread, potatoes mostly) because I'm a vary picky eater and can't eat most food when we go out to dinner. what should i do to stay on a diet?
If you are eating out, and the restaurant cannot provide a menu that you can enjoy - why do you go there? Why pay for services that they are not prepared to offer you?
When I was a young vegetarian (about 25 years ago, and I was only vegetarian for 14 years) I used to take great delight in going to restaurants and insisting that they make something suitable for me (in those days, no restaurants...

Weird?? See my description.
It is not as weird as you think - in that many women suffer the same kind of symptoms you are describing. Talk to your doctor about it - but, by the sound of it, you might be better talking to a doctor without your husband there - not that he is being overly critical, but purely because you might feel that you can express yourself more freely if you were on your own - just like you have done...

Do you believe humankind will invent teleportation? (If you don’t, had you lived in 1858, do you suppose you would have thought humankind would never fly powered airplanes?)
Funny you should ask that - I was alive in 1858 - I never believed that there would be powered flight! Imagine my shock when I saw an aeroplane for the first time. Since then, I have seen a huge rise in the use of the motor vehicle, frozen ready meals, and people wearing baseball caps backwards! Let me tell you, the world has gone mad!!!!

Why not just fly butt naked on airplanes? it would save millions.
Great idea - but.. with all them there naked people on board, the airlines would have to turn up the heating, and provide more sick bags - so that would eat away at the cost saving :(

I can only report on the situation in UK

My mother in law is a passive agressive,She always treats me as though I'm an idiot. i can't stand her and it is ruining my marriage.
Maybe she is treating you like an idiot because she wants you to be at her level!
How does your husband respond to this? After all, he chose to leave his family to be with you. He chose you as his wife. He chose to spend the rest of his life with you.
Maybe she is just plain jealous - play on that - you may be an idiot, but her son is yours!

I have made a will. Although I have nothing specific to give to specific people, making a will gives fairly instant access to my affairs to whatever relatives are still around when I die. I went for a fairly standard will - leaving everything to my next of kin.
But, if I die intestate, then it makes it a LOT more difficult for family to deal with my affairs, sell my house, deal with my...

Their tails are long,
Their faces small,
They haven’t any chin at all.

They nibble things they shouldn’t touch,
And no one seems to like them much.

Do you think its right for religious people to push there religion on others?
It is a difficult one.
It is right for many religious people, because sharing their faith is an intrinsic part of their belief. It is like asking if it is right for telemarketers to phone you at home and try to sell you their products - that is their job, it is what they are employed to do.
Some faiths encourage adherents to go out there and share their beliefs, and it would be wrong to judge...

Answer to:
Is it true that in england when you get fish and chips it comes wrapped in newspaper?
The paper used is the kind of paper used in the newspaper industry - but these days it is blank - has not been printed on.
There are advantages in using paper - the fish and chips stay crisper than when placed in a polystyrene box - the steam stays in the polystyrene, and so the chips become limp when you carry them home.
My local chip shop sometimes puts my packet of chips (wrapped in paper)...
Answer to:
Why does fish and chips always taste better when wrapped in newspaper?
well it depends on the newspaper - they have different built in flavourings - for example, the Sun is saucy! (especially page 3), The Independent is a little dry, and the Daily Mail is for white fish only. And of course, because of its colour, you should only use the Financial Times for eating salmon!
Answer to:
What percentage would you say your diet is made up of red meat?

We have Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, but how come we don't observe Easter Eve or Thanksgiving Eve?
Christmas and New Year involve a celebration of an event which (may or may not have) happened in the night. The birth of Jesus is accepted as being a night time event, and the events which occurred during the night (shepherds, angel etc) are reported to have happened in the night. New year's eve is the countdown to midnight, when the new year begins. So the celebrations are in preparation for...

Why do people do their laundry and smoke at the same time? Isn't that self-defeating?
Well, people do laundry to get things clean - not just to remove smoke smells. Think of underpants. No matter how much you smoke, the smoke smell may not be as bad as the smell of festering underpants - so doing laundry does more than one task!

How many classes a secondary school teacher must take in a day?
That depends from school to school, and country to country.
In UK, students attend 190 days per year, and teachers attend for 195 days (5 days are for training). Most secondary schools have 25 hours of teaching periods per week. Most teachers teach for 22 of those each week. Those teachers with additional responsibility, eg, head of department, might get additional time off teaching to deal...

But, for some reason, they are never used in my classroom, although I have seen the same students use these words with other teachers. So, why do they not use them in my classes? Maybe it is because I have...

Do you think staff on a work-to-rule protest should have their pay docked?
Work to rule means doing what you were employed to do - work exactly to the conditions of your contract, fulfill each and every contractual stipulation - but not doing anything MORE (OR less!). So, basically, it means doing your job exactly as stipulated by your employers. So, of course you should be paid to do that! I suppose that working beyond your contract, performing additional duties etc...

In general, which is better: the book or the movie?
the book - except in the case of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury in that case the movie was better (directed by François Truffaut). The book deals with a futuristic world where books are banned, so the movie can portray that better - we see the main character, Montag, gradually change his view on books, and gradually begin to read - the first time you see printed text is when he learns to...

What's the meaning of "cross the T's and dot the I's" ??? I heard it from a scene in CSI..
In the old days, when we wrote in an elegant cursive script, or in what we used to call "joined up writing", you had to write a whole word without lifting your pen off the page. So, each letter had loops which joined them onto the next letter. Then, after writing a word, you would have to go back and cross the 't' or put a dot on the 'i', as you could obviously not complete these letters...

Is corned beef and cabbage the ultimate Irish joke on the rest of us? I mean, a cheep cut of meat, boiled to death, served with boiled vegetables, including one that is known to cause gas. I wouldn't put it passed them.
yes - it is indeed a joke - it is not eaten in Ireland! It is a meal dreamed up by americans!
Bacon and cabbage, or cabbage and bacon was the staple fare of the irish peasant. So, some of them left and abandoned their country, heading off instead for america, where they believed the streets were paved with gold. But, wishing to maintain a little of their cultural roots, they wanted to eat the...

This is a difficult one - and not related to gender. Obviously it is useful for all boys and girls to be able to carry out repairs, and in taking classes to learn such skills, they are no doubt acquiring other transferable skills (problem solving etc) as well as the obvious skills required to make, mend, repair etc.
However, schools often have to decide which aspects of the curriculum to give...

While I agree that parental influence plays a major part in all aspects of child development, in that the parents are the prime influences in a child's life, and that the role parents play is giving us a society of more disruptive children (how many parents allow children to do and say what they want, therefore not teaching them the importance of adapting behaviour to different situations?),...

knowing that 85% of paedophiles are gay men would you let a gay man babysit your young boys
Actually, I did not know that 85% of paedophiles were gay men! I assumed that paedophiles had a preference for children, whereas gay men had a preference for men!
However, there are reports which suggest that the largest percentage of child abuse cases occur in the home with a close relative - so would you be worried about letting a father babysit his own children?

I would love to have taken part in this vote, but there was no option for my vote! I do think about where meat comes from. I consider carefully where I buy my meat, but do not hate it. I buy meat from free range/organic sources, and prefer to buy locally produced meat where possible.

It could not be a typographical error - as people did not type in those days. They wrote things by hand. So, it might be a graphical error. Or... just plain amazing! I suppose it really depends what the issue is that you raise. If, for example. this colleague gets angry when you mention that you are sleeping with his wife, or even his mother, then it is fairly understandable.
But, for other issues, I would tend to go via a superior - having a third party deal with it might be preferable - as it removes both of you from the situation, and gives a more...

The perimiter of a rectangle is 14 centimeters. Its length is 3 centimeters more than its width.Find the length and the width.please help me
2cm by 5 cm
Yayyy!!! I got one right.
But how? Ok.. 14 cm perimeter, and two sides are 3cm longer.
2 x 3cm longer = 6cm
14cm perimeter - 6cm = 8 cm
That means that if all sides were the same length they would each be 2 cm long (8/4).
So.... 2 sides are 3 cm longer, which means they must be 5 cm long
If 2 are 2cm long, and 2 are 5 cm long that makes a total perimeter of 14 cm

It is a really hard choice - obviously I would choose Amsterdam - I love the place, but I would also like Berlin - never been there! London is too easy - I live so close it would seem silly to go there for a holiday. And as for Prague - that is somewhere I would love to visit too. Can I just go to all of them?

Always look so chic
But I will soon be off
Leaving at the end of the week.

What do you thin about emos?
I do not mind the idea of being an emo, as a fashion statement, or a phase, or whatever- what I do object to is the idea that to be an emo you must cut yourself - that seems plain silly. All teenagers growing up, need to find a group to identify with - whether that is the football team, the cheerleaders, the rock kids, the emos or whatever - but to identify with a group which supports self harm...

for the same reason as they look at you as crazy when you dye your hair green, or become vegetarian, or vote for Bush - they just do not understand.
But, where all the examples I have given are temporary, killing yourself is permanent - they will lose you from their lives for ever. And they see that you will not have the opportunity to have so many happy experiences later in life. Or maybe,...

Blaise Pascal, French philosopher and mathematician, is famed for his "wager" (Pascal's wager) Basically, he suggests that you should go ahead and believe in god anyway - if you die and there is no god, what have you lost? but if you do not believe and when you die, you find that there is a god, then you have lost everything.

Could someone give me a non-religious reason to not kill myself?
Albert Camus - french writer, and humanist, wrote a lovely little philosophical treatise called: The Myth of Sisyphus. He begins by saying: There is only one real philsophical question, and that is suicide. If you really think there is no reason to live, then why not just commit suicide? If you do not, it must be that you think there is some reason to live.
Camus' text is based on the greek...

If my uncle gets me pregnant, what are the risks of having an abnormal pregnancy? Will the baby be healthy?
It all depends on whether the uncle is a blood relative (ie, brother or your mother or father) or an uncle by marriage (ie, brother-in-law of your mother or father). The danger or ill-health through inter-familial marriage is due to sharing of a limited gene pool. But if your uncle is an uncle by marriage, then there is no sharing of genes.
It is, however, not a desirable situation.

Regardless of what your parents think, they do not own the company. The company has made a decision regarding minimum age, and you must respect it. What if you parents said you can drive at age 8 - even though the law says you can't?
I must admit, I have very little respect for your parents, if they are happy to let you break a company policy. But, while they are willing to do it, why not...

I think your only solution is to either stay indoors throughout winter, or move to somewhere where it is ok to wear short sleeved cotton clothes all year round.
Or just get used to long sleeves- maybe wear a cotton long sleeved t shirt underneath, so it is next to your skin, and then wear anything you like on top of it

We all have to learn about things that are uncomfortable, or that we do not agree with. One of the purposes of education is to give children a range of views that they can then assess and evaluate before deciding which viewpoint to follow. If they are denied the opportunity to investigate evolution, or conversely are denied the opportunity to investigate creationism, then how are we preparing...

How would everyone feel about Tiger Woods (and themselves) if this scandal drove him to suicide?
He is responsible for his own actions. He caused the scandal - he needs to take responsibility for that. If he allows his own actions to drive him to suicide, then that again is his own responsibility... and cowardice.

My girlfriend and I recently got engaged. I just moved her things into my appartment. She has brought into our house notes, pictures, and a diary from past relationships. I love her dearly and don't wan't to over react. How should I feel?
"my appartment" - if you can have your space, she can have hers.
But, if you are intending on spending your lives together, then it is something that you should talk about. There could be reasons why she has chosen to retain this.
A lot depends on the nature of the past relationship - say, for example, she had been married before, had 3 children, and then her husband died - she cannot deny...

You have answered your own question - the reason why you should not kill yourself is in your question: "when i get bouts of severe depression I feel this way". So, there are times when you do not feel this way!
Now, our old friend Albert Camus (google him if you don't know him) wrestled with this problem too - he wrote a nice little philosophical text called "The Myth of Sisyphus", which be...

Ok, so you have college exams coming up, a girlfriend who wants to spend time with you, and here you are on AB. Maybe if you cut out the time spent here and divided it equally between the exams and the g/f then you might end up with a good job and someone to share your success with!

Does being on this site cure your loneliness, or does it make it worse, knowing your Friends on Answerbag, might not Really be your Friends in real life
nothing cures loneliness - this site can help, but what i hate about it is that when you are having a really bad day, and ask a question about being lonely, there is always some little (insert rude word here) who will take the opportunity to make it worse, by adding hurtful comments etc. It is on days like that, that this site can be the worst place in the world to be - there is no way of...

I asked a couple - and they were not rejected - I think you just have to accept that they have a different mind set about what constitutes a question - the purpose of asking etc. The majority of questions here would be rejected - either because they are too frivolous, or because they have a spelling mistake in them, or because they have been asked already.

Can we please get that Islam promoting violence thing off the front page? The opening paragraph is annoyingly Americentric.
The whole site is annoyingly Americentric!!!!!
Answer to:
Is this question, posted by Answerbag, biased and offensive: "Does Islam Promote Violence?" No other religions are mentioned.
There have been earlier polls, debates etc featured which focus ONLY on religions... I do not think it is biased against muslims, but it is definitely biased pro religion, and pro USA - all polls debates etc that I have seen so far have represented ONLY the interests of USA, which is very disappointing - I thought that the world had grown out of narrow mindedness

I avoided them in the old format too! I never go to advertising sites - especially when that advertising is unsolicited, as in this case. The advertising is frankly annoying - but is even more annoying in the new site than the old, as it crops up in the MIDDLE of answer threads!!!!
However, ironically, the first one I noticed was advertising a site which answers questions *LOL*

With Answerbag's own debates and questions, I've noticed that there are many topics applicable only to Americans. Is this a good idea?
this site is a business - it needs to decide who its target audience is. Those of us who are not in USA are marginalised due to the overwhelming american content of the site.
If AB seems to pay so little regard to its "customers", then it will fail, as has been demonstrated in the recent mass exodus - so AB start to pay attention to the needs of your customers!
