About me: Note: Please don't take offense, but I DO NOT accept friend requests period.

A shining example of Sea Shepherd founder, Paul Watson at work in the yellow jacket depicted. Ramming vessels, sinking two (he claims) and spilling the hazardous waste such as PCB's and bunker oil into the Oceans to kill what he claims to protect and other species. Makes sense? I don't think so but he doesn't think that far ahead. Nor does he care about the well being of his crew or the crew of the vessel he attacks, just the headlines and the donations he can garner from it.

Ahh..the time of year is upon us once again. The annual Commercial Seal Hunt is taking place off the east coast of my nation.
To set records straight here, let's start off with the fact I am agnostic. I'm on the fence when it comes to religion. I haven't seen enough from both sides of the argument to satisfy any stance I may take. I do research this and am open to both sides of the argument when whatever they argue can be proved and not hearsay.
That sets up my stance on the commercial seal hunt.
I didn't know where I stood until about 15 years ago. I did my research. I didn't rely on emotion from either side of this issue. I also have a vested interest in anything to do with our Oceans, Lakes or waterways, since that's where I work. I'm a clean water freak I guess. I'm also an eco freak and an animal WELFARE one. Note that I said welfare, not rights. The two groups are about as close as Earth is to the outer edges of the known universe. The WWF( World Wildlife Fund), GreenPeace , Nature Conservatories world wide, and your local SPCA are all welfare and conservation groups for example. USHS, PETA, ALF etc on the other hand aren't. These people have a priority for fund raising first, chest thumping second, criminal activity third with animals and eco systems way down their to do lists.
It's that previous paragraph that makes me support the seal hunt. If Harp Seals were endangered, I'd reverse that stance in a heartbeat. They aren't. If the hunt is cruel and inhumane, I would be against it as well. It's not and that's been backed up by Independent Veterinarian groups as well as some notable welfare and conservationists.
As for the Harp seal population off Canada's coast. They are eating themselves out of house and home. Sadly, they aren't to blame. Humans are. We dropped the ball as a species more times than we deserve to be forgiven for. The EU countries adopting a ban on seal products? Hypocrites. They in large part decimated the food stocks that the Harp relies on. Most of those countries also practice what's called a cull. They kill a species without actually using what they kill. Culls can be good if they are for the right reason. Killing a species native to an area that is not a species sustainable one? Bad. Killing a species non native? Good because chances are that man introduced that species and it shouldn't be there. That just messes with mother nature. Culling an overpopulated native species, also good but has it's drawbacks in that it's difficult to do entirely humanely and also difficult to assess numbers of that species. Not impossible, but difficult.
The Industrial countries? Hey...we collectively messed up little things like weather patterns. The Harp Seal main predator is a Polar Bear. In case you hadn't heard, Alaska has it on the endangered species list. Because of the global warming trend, no doubt it will be here in Canada as well eventually. Bears need ice floes to hunt seal. Seals are born willy nilly because it's their duty in the eco system to be food for the bears. Fewer bears...and we see what we're seeing now. Overpopulation of Harp Seals. The number is rising, even with increasing hunt quotas. Cod, part of their diet is going down, even though strict controls have been placed on the harvest for the last 20 years. To the point that Naval vessels have fired on EU trawlers. I was on one of those Destroyers. I'd fire again.
Bottom line? If seal products are banned in EU countries DFO has always said there will be a cull if a commercial hunt becomes obsolete because of lack of product demand . An almost unregulated and real slaughter. To save that species before they die of starvation and disease. Thanks animal rights...you just made animal welfare into nothing. You have accomplished one of two things.
1/ The introduction of a cull (which nobody wanted, DFO or animal rights groups).
2/ The possible extinction of several species in one go.

Quite a track record of causing animals more grief through ignorance of fact, ignorance how eco systems operate, ignorance of how wildlife conservation and protection really works. Kudos animal rights. You couldn't have killed more than if you used a nuclear weapon on them.
I often wonder where these groups are when species at risk of extinction need help. Not around obviously, since many of those species aren't all that cute and good money makers. Where were these groups when other seal species that WERE endangered died out? What are they doing about illegal hunting of protected endangered species elsewhere? Nothing, not even when it's happening in their own backyard. Where are these people when the Polar Bear needs help? What are they doing about sea turtles on the endangered list? Nothing. They are doing nothing. There's no money in protesting them. Instead they protest a visible hunt done sustainably ,humanely and in the best interests of wildlife conservation of all species. Good money there, especially when you can lie to get it.

Sea Shepherd, HSUS, PETA, ALF, you're all a bunch of terrorists. Worse...you're anti planet , anti ecosystem and anti everything bunch of urbanites that have never set foot in a pasture or an ice floe. If you'd like to help the planet...don't have kids. Humans can help fix this problem we all are responsible for but firebombing places, posing with whitecoats on the ice (illegal to be that close) and bother something that's not hunted, Heather Mills, no wonder it bit you!! I would too!!!
Some interesting reading is located here, for anyone with an open mind.
http://thesealfishery.com/ Many links here worth reading from Veterinarian and Conservation groups on the seal hunt besides the author's information on sealing. Excellent resource of material.
